Rose of Raby, detective needed.
« on: June 08, 2009, 01:49:21 PM »

Can anyone help me please? I'm trying to learn Rose of Raby from a post on Youtube, it can be found at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1yDyH4U968
My problem is that whilst I have got the tune I can't fit it in with the bass either on my C/F or D/G. I am trying to keep to the same fingering pattern as the player on youtube as this is how it flows the best, I have found the tune in other places on the keyboard, but it lackes the necessary smoothness.

So, can anyone work out what keys this players box is in (C/F/?)?, or have any ideas as to where to start this tune so the basses fit and it all runs smoothly? If so please let me know. There is another version of this tune on youtube by Busketeer but it seems to lack the fluidity of the version that I am trying to learn. I am pretty much a by ear player so anything too technical will confuse me!!

thanks,

Tim

Sorry, that should read as C/G/?, for the suspected keys of this player's box.

Tim

It is G/C/? rather than C/G/?  ie G on the outside row, C on the middle row.  The inside row is most likely to be F or a full row of accidentals, but he seems to be playing only on the outside and middle rows. He is playing in the key of A minor

You should be able to use exactly the same fingering to play on the outside row of your D/G when it will come out in E minor, or on the outside row of the C/F in D minor.

Many thanks Theo, all is now well. What I was doing was trying to start the tune a 4th lower than is correct. I think I was starting too low as obviously the G/C is pitched lower and I was unwittingly trying to emulate it! All these problems would be easily solved if I got myself a G/C. I am saving up but it  may take a while yet!! Thanks again for your, help I am just running through the first part with both ends now!

It was originally in Gm but I play it in Em on a standard D/G box, (so Dm on a C/F).  Then all you need is a standard 8 button bass. Try out what the French call eg for a D/G box:

  • C bass with D chord (usually on pull)
  • B bass with D chord (push) Technically a Bm6
  • C bass with Em chord (pull) this one particularly sombe  8)

Do we have a name for these? eg crossed chords??   The 'rose' was Henry VII's wife, Elizabeth of York incidently, and Raby is a castle in the Tees Valley. Chris

Thanks Chris!
Just had it all going nicely and then you had to mention those accords composes!! Have started to look for the right places to fit them in now, it certainly does give the tune more dimension. I've read some of your comments about French tunes and their rhythms, any chance you could put an example of each tune type/rhythm on youtube so those of us who aren't so educated in these things can hear the difference, and maybe learn the best way to approach these sometimes unfamiliar rhythms.
thanks again,
