One Wet Afternoon & Dick Cribb - Aussie dance tunes
« on: October 25, 2015, 10:42:03 AM »

One Wet Afternoon & Dick Cribb

I first heard these two lively Australian tunes played in a set by "No Such Thing', a band from Kiama NSW. The band played them again in an Aussie tune session at last weekend's Kangaroo Valley folk festival which prompted me to sit down and learn them on the D/G box.

One Wet Afternoon was composed by a shearer named Bill Case from Mt Gambier SA. The sheep weren't shorn when their fleece was damp, so a wet afternoon was a welcome break to give the shearers' backs a rest.

All I know about Dick Cribb is that it was recorded in the 1960's from the playing of Jim & George Bennett in Gunnedah NSW, and it sounds like it may have originally been the melody to a popular song.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy something a bit different.

Playing nicely in my little garden room in Redfern, thanks Smiley :D Great tunes and good, strong musical line as always. Very timely too, as I'm being taken to the Addison Road Bush Music session tonight. Perfect to quickly practice something up in advance :P Thanks

Gosh, Sydney's changed a bit!

Try the Loaded Dog Folk Club, I think it's on Thursdays.

Thanks, but will be conferencing in Adelaide by then, and was massively jet lagged nope: missed it by 4 hours, last week.

The disappeared day effect is perplexing, but will get it back on return

Gosh, Sydney's changed a bit!

G'day Chris
Sydney sometimes seems like another world to me these days. Take a sound recorder along with you to the Bush Music Club session and you'll pick up some good local stuff. The BMC sessions at the Kangaroo Valley festival were popular, although a friend observed we were all roughly the same age - not many younger players are interested.

You chose a good time to visit, before the hot weather arrives and we swelter in the humidity. Drop me a PM if you'd like to catch up. There are a few melnetters living in the Big Smoke.
cheers, Ian

Loved it Smiley! I'm guessing the tunes are being played on a one row;do you know what it might be?

Thanks Brian. I played a D/G Tommy for the recording. I like the 'old school' wet sound it has with the low reeds engaged (as tuned by Malcolm Clapp). The first tune suits a one-row in D well, but then the second tune is in G. I'll put up the dots for both tunes.

After listening to the original tape recordings of these two tunes I found they were both played in C. Dick Cribb was played on an anglo concertina in a distinctive 'suck & blow' style similar to a mouth organ. Bill Case played One Wet Afternoon on the C row of his G/C box (LMM reeds) with the first part in the higher octave before dropping down for the second part.

I recorded them on my C/F Erica and the duff notes I played definitely weren't on the original recordings...
