Tune of the Month for November 2015: Idbury Hill
« on: November 01, 2015, 07:29:34 AM »

Worthy winner this one;

Idbury Hill - A rather special Morris tune, very well demonstrated here by Frank: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyX2QPLsw1AA

Fits beautifully on a 2 row 8 bass - honest! Give it a try :-)

I was sure I'd already done this as a previous Tune of the Month, and a quick scan of YouTube reveals this was indeed the case. Here it is!

P.S. I now see that Sebastian has linked to the thread where that and many other contributions appear.

Am I being picky if I say I thought Clive was looking for different contributions to earlier?

As I mentioned in an earlier post to the original poll,  in this demo I'm not using the 1/2 row or the extra 4 basses on this box, so it is being played as a 2-row, 8-bass.

No, you're quite right.  :|bl I missed the  poll thread for this month, which makes that clear.
My excuse is I've been away on holiday and though I had internet access, I didn't have so much time to use it.

Yes, but Clive's beautiful rendition from March 2012 is well worth another listen - inspiring!

You are absolutely right, of course, as are Annahata's, but I would love to see what they (and others) produce when challenged to top those efforts: Maybe a Japanese Thrash Metal version on the Streb? Or a setting in the style of Gilbert and Sullivan? >:E

If I played it again as a morris tune on the Oakwood, it wouldn't be very different from the previous one I did.
The previous thread had some discussion on a 1-row version. I might have a go at that, just to be different.
Thrash metal/G&S ? I wouldn't know where to start!

Thanks, Graham. My 'Favourites' page is rapidly filling up with Bill's contributions. Seeing clearly where his fingers go is a huge bonus...

Thank you to Graham for re-posting my 2012 contribution and to Brian for your positive feedback.

Difficult to know what to add or change but:-

https://youtu.be/XJ1S3An5kkI

I deliberately avoided the cross row scale runs to maintain a 'choppy' feel and starting on the 'B' chord felt consistent with that.

Best wishes

Bill

Here's my version of this; a bit different from first time around a couple of years back (which was indeed a jig) - this is in standard time, played on a 1920's Hohner G/C 12 bass on the inside row, so in D minor (which of course, is the saddest key!). I use the D push chord on the extra basses first time through; the rest of the time it's all perfectly playable on a standard 2 row 8 bass with thirds off.

Cheers,

Of playing for the morris, William Kimber said "These are the notes you play...you play no others."

I'm guessing he wouldn't approve of this, then...

William Kimber would eat his heart out (gruesome expression). This is  the best version I have heard!
