I might have to come up for a couple of days, I was meant to be going to Sidmouth for the first weekend with my Morris team, but this has been cancelled, and was going  to be my only festival this year (whitby is about 5 hours closer as well, a nice drive up the coast).

Not Sidmouth itself, but our team's involvement.

I am considering driving down from North Scotland to Whitby but probably cant arrive until the 24th. Will there be plenty of sessions and workshops left to join in? And can I get a list of venues from here before I leave Scotland?

Gary, there will be plenty  more to do, the programme goes on until Friday 28th.  There is a huge amount in the program, you can order one here

Whitby Tourist information centre 01723 383636  keep up to date vacancy lists for B&Bs.  How about camping?

dont spend too much time looking around  as there is a particulary high demand for accomodation in whitby this year as the folk week is on at hte same time as whitby (sailing) regatta - they only coincide about every 4 years.

Eeee - that's so Yorkshire. The little town's got 2 good tourist high points each summer, yet somehow manages to clash them on the same week. Almost worthy of a Stanley Holloway monologue.

Over on Mudcat this has been discussed  and they say it is something to do with High Tide ( or the swell)for the yachts ............ not even that old King Canute could stem the flow, even for Folk Week!!  ha ha

Over on Mudcat they are saying that next year it will be the same week, a coincidence eh!!

Thanks for the prompting, I now have my b and b booked. Really looking forward to meeting many from here and especially Theo who fettled my pokerwork a few years ago.
Now I need to find a decent tape recorder to catch the sessions and also wondering if i need  a wrist protector for my left wrist because I will be playing a lot more than usual ? I see that Sharon Shannon uses a big yellow sponge, I fancy a small leather strap.

A really good idea is one of those small foam sponges that are wrapped in chamois leather which are used for cleaning the inside of car windscreens etc. Helps a lot of folk from what I've been told. Though personally I've not found the need to use one.

This year  I will be doing three  musicians sessions in the middle earth  'well known tunes at a steady pace giving everybody the chance to join in' sort of thing.  All 3 sessions will follow the same format

Tues  1 to 3 pm
Wed   1 to 3 pm
Thurs  5 to 7pm

I will be doing  DG melodeon wrkshops in the stakesby arms ( just down the road from the main camp site)
Mon, Tues , Wed, Thurs 10am to  11.20  DG Melodeon a Crash course for beginners(
also useful for those who  have left the box in the wardrobe for a couple of years!)  This 'course' is suitable for those who have bought a box the day before!  It is progressive but anybody unable to attend all 4 days will get something out of the individual workshops.

Fri  10am to 11.20  an intermediate (ish) workshop 'Playing waltzes on the DG box.

The middle earth sessions are free & the workhsops are included in season ticket price or non season ticket holders can pay at each workshop.

BCC#  Whilst there are unlikely to be enough people to warrant a programmed workshop on the BCC# I will be happy to meet up with anyone  who wants to know a bit more about the system, perhaps after one of the middle earth sessions - if interested email me or send a personal message.
