Options for the "Opening Page" on melnet?
« on: November 06, 2015, 12:35:03 PM »

How about about an "Active Topics" button?
I have my opening page set as "Show unread posts since last visit." but this isn't really what I want. I would much prefer to open the site and see all the active topics at a glance. (Mind you, I've no idea as to how this is done, but I do see it on other sites.)

I open up on the 'home' button, this is recent posts with the categories down the right hand side of page.

In the past Theo has been pretty accepting of adding requested features to the site. The site is made using forum software called "Simple Machines Forums" and the website has a bunch of customizations available. I'd suggest looking through and seeing if any match what you're looking for.

Thanks TomB, that's OK as far as it goes, but there's only 10 postings. I hadn't noticed the postings on there before, but I'll change to that now, as it is better than what I'm currently using.

deltasalmon, I looked on there at your suggestion. However, it seems to be written in Double Dutch which isn't a lot of use for a thick hammer swinger like me.

Don't quite get what you are asking for Edward.  Isn't the information you want in the front page? All the unread posts are there.
if you want all the topics that have unread posts in them then I don't know of a way to do that.
As with all requests for new features I will wait and see if there is a groundswell of opinion in favour.

Do you mean the "recent posts"' list at the botton of http://forum.melodeon.net ?
That seems to be exactly what Edward is asking for. It lists the 10 most recent posts.

The "unread topics" and "new replies" links do all I need.

I'm thinking of something like this:

http://www.luxor4u.com/forum/search.php?search_id=active_topics

The drop down list on the "View Post Options" button. But maybe it's not possible on your template, I don't know.

I suppose that in general, most of us have got used to the way this site/forum works, and we each choose our favourite tried and tested way of navigating it.

In my case, my starting point is always the 'Show unread posts since last visit' next to my avatar pic. Failing that, or if I want to view a recent post a second time, I choose the 'Forum Home' tab, then click on each category in turn which opens a further listing of all the subjects with their latest posts in time order. This basically equates to 'Active posts' for my personal forum visiting pattern.  As I visit the forum at least once daily, my methodology means that I tend to stay up to date with posts.

As Theo has cleverly and deliberately organised the Forum Home tab into very well chosen categories, I am content with the structure as it stands, as it helps me prioritise the areas of the forum with which I have most interest and I will read these first.

Me too, too. But reading this I ought to have a more structured approach I suppose. I just dive in and browse.. (:)

I cut out one step in Steve's method by having my mel.net bookmark take me directly to

http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php?action=unread

Thus opening the site at the unread page.

Could we have an opening page for limericks?
I'm sure that  could be very full of  lovely tricks
But as you all know we must preserve status quo
So If it ain't broke don't Screwfix it.

With poetic licence and moderators permission of course..... Or not as the case may be!  >:E
