Theme of the Month for December 2015: Christmas time!
« on: December 01, 2015, 12:24:43 AM »

Yes indeed folks, it's that time of year when it's time to be festive, eat mince pies, etc. And record something vaguely Christmas/winter/snow/etc related. I'm kind of out of ideas of what to record for this (since we do it every year!), so let's please make that definition *very* broad!

Cheers,

Clive

Hi Everybody,

This is my first message, but I browse the forum since one year. I'm happy because I will contribute this month : I'm (co)admin of a French Facebook melodeon group and we just launch our Theme of the month : Christmas ! I will encourage my friends to contribute too.

Surely going by retail outlets and TV this should have been theme of the month for November?  >:E

Wellcome Christmas Morning by Sir Jimmy Shand.  Dots and ABC available on 'the session' website. Several you tube vids including one  of the man himself playing it which is on a new foster and allen CD  (youtube foster and allen welcome Christmas morning  )  Other you tubes of it are by Ian Cruikshanks  and   Jim Johnstone  + a few others to go at.

There is a very nice recording of Silent Night     on the CD  'Jimmy Shands favourite hymns', played by him on a 2 row Erica.

Unfortunaltely there are no you tube vids of it  but the CD can be had for £10   either google jimmy shands  favourite hymns or google 'sir jimmy shand   MBE  MA ' which will bring up the Shand family website   upon which it and several other top quality CD's taken from the original master recordings are available.

Perhaps a time for excess:  a tune, 'The Mistletoe', and a multitracked song, 'The Turning of the Wheel' written by Sheila Haskins with music by John Goodluck from the repertoire of The Bards of the Heath, of which I am a member. (More fun with the band).

(For the 'anoraks' I used NCH free Wavepad and Mixpad software Zoom Q3 and Logitech cameras with a Zoom Q2 as microphone for the separate tracks, the workings of all of which I have little understanding, but simply treat them as big paintbrushes on a floor canvas, (as may be apparent)!)

Yes, and there are various german christmas classics on Youtube played on the Styrian harmonica. You can get them printed in Griffschrift notation, if you want. I would especially recommend Herbert Pixner Projekt in Weihnachten in Europa 2009 playing Vierteljahrhund Dreiviertler

Finally found a Christmas tune I haven't played yet! Here we are, John Rutter's 'What Sweeter Music', which if you haven't heard it is a gorgeous choral piece where John has set Robert Herrick's 17th Century poem to music. Beautiful, really beautiful. This isn't quite as beautiful, but isn't far off the original tune - ok, so I ditched the key change at the end of the original, duplicated one or two phrases, and added a few pregnant pauses, but apart from that...

Played on the Van der Aa in G/C.
