Tune of the Month for December 2015: Flatworld
« on: December 01, 2015, 12:33:55 AM »

Still waiting to here officially from Andy for the ok to play his wonderful tune, but here it is, a worthy winner and one that's quite likely to appear in any session in the UK.

Here it is played by Andy himself https://youtu.be/UEYR5F_j7sU?t=3m29s (2nd tune in set) and here, somewhat slower and more close up - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLWhMcmQdFY - you can see it's a cross row tune really; in fact it sits beautifully cross the rows. Much easier in fact, I would suggest that playing it up and down the row.

Happy playing folks; looking forward to hearing your versions!

Outwith my comfort zone and at the edges of competence, this is as far as puffing Billy gets, (even in a flatworld), before retiring to a darkened shed in a quiet siding. (Working from the chords to the melody fingering cleared a block for me, so may be worth using notation with chords. There is an occasional minor substitution in the playing, which I attribute to the folk process!)

I think I'm right in believing that Andy has used the 'Fantasy sound' setting on his Mory to good effect on the Youtube recording of Flatworld. ::)
As ever, playing to aspire to, and regrettably in my case never come near to achieving. :'(

Back to the 'music room' for another 10000 hours of practice before I post my version I think !

Nice Bill. Not one I'll ever aspire to but if I ever did I'd try and do it like your version..

Really enjoyed this. Can I ask what you played it on and whether a 3 row means not having to change direction mid chord in the B section?

I did play it on the 3 row and used the third row for D and C reversals as well as the G# at the end of the first time through. When paying it on a 2 row, I'd just miss out the chords for those notes!

It's more that I'm pants at changing direction for single notes rather than worrying about the break in the chord - possibly that I have an affinity for tunes mainly in one direction at a time, so never practise the push pull technique, also perhaps the longer (I think they are) bellows on my Serafini may make it a bit less quick to turn. I assume it was on your Mengascini?

Let me know if you want it for a different box, or are struggling with the chords. I can knock something up for you.

Hi,
I have a tab for this tune in Am for a G/C box but it works just the same in Em for a D/G. I have been trying to attach it without success  :(...any suggestions?

Whats a tab?  ;D I began learning this by ear some time ago, based on a utube clip by a chap called Hector, who I think comes from Australia. As always things change in the playing. The same fingering works on a three voice D/G but sounds best on the G/C.

A tablature is the music written for melodeon which shows you a way to play the tune. Which buttons, which direction etc.  (:). If you would like to see it(as I can't seem to figure out how to post it here) send me an e-mail:- roland.carson@btconnect.com and I would be happy to send it to you  :D I think this tune was composed in Am so it works well on G/C

Just a reminder for folks with short memories ;).
There was a good thread about this tune; how to play it, which keys to play it in, etc., back in 2011.

Here's the link to the first post in the thread. It's worth following through all the contributions.

Andy Cutting himself joined in the discussion.

Just looked at that thread, and found lots of useful tips.
One thing I notice about this tune and  Horizonto are the implied cycle of fifths in the B section (where the chords descend by a 5th). I've always been a sucker for this ubiquitous technique, and it's never worn thin.
So I would suggest that instead of Mr Ryall's (B section)

|:Em   | C    | D    | G | Em   | C    | D    | B    |
| Em   | C    | D    | G  | Em   | C    | B   | Em :|

I'd replace the C with an Am, the  Em with a C, and the C with an Am (as a better substitute for some sort of F# half dim)
|:Em   | Am   | D    | G | C   | Am    | D    | B    |

Then the D chord is merely an interruption of the complete (implied) diatonic cycle.

Just to check - as I'm thinking in G/C terms and can't myself see the wood for the trees now with all the bold brackets in front of me.
B section chords in Am
Am - Dm - G - C - F - Dm - G - E (or Em)

Dm is a good aural substitute  for B dim in this context, and the G is a nice delay for the real next chord, and the G chord gets omitted in the repeat as we go straight to E (then Am) for the full package of 5ths:

Am - Dm - G - C - F - Dm - E - Am

with only the 2nd Dm to tempt us to hear something more complex.

This is very close to Alexandra Browne's* transcription of what Andy Cutting played when she was compiling her extraordinary tunebook 'Diatonic Liaisons' **. I hope she won't mind me attaching a jpg version of Flatworld from the book, given that she has previously included it in the linked thread. From this you can see that the B-music chord sequence as given in Diatonic Liaisons is:

|: Am - F - G - C - F - Dm - |1st Bm - Em :|2nd Em - Am ||
