Lester's Liliput
« on: November 10, 2007, 12:05:01 PM »

Hating to heap even more praise on Theo, lest he become big headed  ::), but I have just got my Liliput back from Theo's ministrations and it is wonderful. He converted it from C/F to D/G and generally fixed it up. I think it will be instantly promoted to my morris box as it is light, loud and has got the wonderful Hohner sound.

Everyone needs a Liliput in their collection!

So true! Just finished renovating mine, also a C/F to D/G conversion.
Now should I repitch the Preciosa too? Or quit while I'm ahead?

Like, I really need another D/G box!!!       ;D

I'm feeling very excited about this -- I have just acquired a Liliput. I had been feeling a little oh, is it too shabby, did I pay too much for it -- but then I saw how much the Liliputs on Pete Grassby's stall were (also in unrestored condition, more than twice what I paid including shipping, customs and so on), and I feel much better now. Now I just need to ring Theo and sort out getting it to him, getting a quote and so on. The ringing endorsements for the quality of Theo's work were very impressive this weekend!

Preciosas are very nice boxes, but the reeds a a PIA to work on.

Last year at Sidmouth I got myself a Galotta Sport 42, about the same size as a lilliput but only two rows (and about a third the price).  Although it's in need of some magic fingers running over it I love it to bits even if it's in C/F - I have no desire to change it to D/G.  In fact, I think we should all change to C/F, it sounds much nicer than D/G and sod the fiddle players ;D

All the really good fiddle players I know love to play in Bflat.  If a C/F box is nicer than D/G  then Bflat/Eflat is even better.  The guitar player in my band keeps encouraging me to get a Bflat box.

So a Streb is the answer then!

Not for me! :o  I just can't stand the sound of synthesisers pretending to be like real instruments.  I'd rather have one instrument with real reeds in it even tuned in F blunt and nobody else would play with me. ::) Analog for the 21st century.  Digital is so last century. :o

Afraid you might need moderating, Theo? :P

I absolutely agree with you. (But then I've never tried one...  :D)

As a useful reality check, Streb lovers, step outside your diatonic frame of mind and remember your reaction the first time you heard (or heard of) a midi piano accordion...

Theo/Steve

I will file you both under the "don't get what a Streb is about" heading. A Streb will never replace a "proper" melodeon but it is good for:

  • havingfun
  • playing with others is keys other than God's chosen ones (D/G)
  • making funny noises
  • getting yourself noticed
  • practicing in hotel rooms whilst not getting ejected
  • practicing through headphones what you have just had demo'd at M@W in a room full of others doing the same
  • etc etc etc

So we agree it is not a melodeon and not suited to everyone but I love mine!

I can appreciate all those points Lester. I might be tempted to get one if they cost £200. But if I had the current price of a Streb to spend on a new box, well, it wouldn't be a Streb.

The thing that alarms me the most in the posts I have read about Strebs is the idea of someone playing one in a session. I'd find that to be in very poor taste.

Yes, Lester, they wouldn't be big enough for both of us!  ;)

All the really good fiddle players I know love to play in Bflat.  If a C/F box is nicer than D/G  then Bflat/Eflat is even better.  The guitar player in my band keeps encouraging me to get a Bflat box.

Have they had a change of heart, then, or a change of fiddle player? I seem to remember your saying a while back that the fiddlers you played with didn't like Bb and I accused them of being wimps. Oh wait, maybe they don't fall into the "really good" category!

I'd love a Bb box -  a half-step in A/A# to be precise, particularly so that I could play with friends that have Bb flutes - fabulous sound.

Hang on a minute....
I have been to a couple of sessions where Lester has played his Streb, and I'll have you know he does so in very good taste. No gimmicks - just good honest playing. I've been to far more sessions where other people have played 'conventional' instruments badly and insensitively. If there is going to be such a thing as poor taste, it resides in the player, not in the instrument.
OK?

Please don't anyone get upset, that was not my intention.

I don't want to stop anyone playing a midi instrument,  I just don't want one myself.  And I can see the advantages of silent playing.  I suppose I'm lucky in having a place to practice where I can't be heard.  I wouldn't even object to anyone bringing one to a session. Hey, I've played in sessions with three bodhrans all playing together, but at different speeds.  Now that almost did get me upset.

And Steve, just a story in response to your question about midi accordions.  I spent a week in a trade fair the year before last where another trader had a new reedless accordion from a well known Italian maker.  Not a pleasant memory.

Actually Steve, when you think about it, poor taste is always in the eye (or ear, or judgment) of the beholder. Which is why I said "I would find that..."

Perhaps I should have said instead, "I wouldn't appreciate that" - and I wouldn't, although obviously a sensitive player would help. And of course much depends on the type of setting. In the kind of session that I most like to play in or listen to, a Streb would really not fit in. But I might enjoy Lester's contribution in its own setting. OK?  8)

Hi all
This isnt meant as confrontational or to prolong an argument, just a simple question
If you havent heard one, Steve, how do you know you wont like it in your session, is is just a case of fear of the unknown  ;)

G'day Lin

It's true that I haven't heard one in the flesh as it were, but I've heard plenty of samples over the net. It's an aesthetic and philosophical thing really - the fact that all the instruments I play with in sessions are acoustic is important to me. I have quite enough electronics in almost every other part of my life and I really like getting away from them. The absence of batteries and speakers, and - more importantly - the beauty and sheer tangible physical quality of the sound that acoustic instruments produce, are a considerable part of the pleasure I get from making music. The people I play with wouldn't like anyone to join in on electric bass or a Casio keyboard either...

Hope this helps you understand my attitude, which wasn't intended to be confrontational.
Steve
