Le Lundi UPDATE (Florence Pindivic!)
« on: December 21, 2015, 05:35:09 PM »

Hey, all, just to let you know, I've begun posting a new (to me) video of French box playing every Monday over on the blog. This began when I called for tribute recordings after the Paris attack. The weekly feature is Le Lundi Accordéonaire -- I don't post my own videos, but stuff that I've found or had pointed out to me. So far I've posted four. Here are the links from most recent to oldest.

http://accordeonaire.blogspot.com/2015/12/le-lundi-accordeonaire-iv.html
http://accordeonaire.blogspot.com/2015/12/le-lundi-accordeonaire-iii.html
http://accordeonaire.blogspot.com/2015/12/le-lundi-accordeonaire.html
http://accordeonaire.blogspot.com/2015/11/le-lundi-accordeonaire.html

If you know of anything that you think I should feature, let me know. Thanks,

Gary

Thanks for the encouragement. I missed some weeks because work was crazy, but I've gotten a lot of supportive communication.

It is my opinion that singing ruins otherwise good music.  This, and most French tunes, are an exception.

I watched this video last month.  Good to see it again.

Note his box has 7 buttons on the inner row.

Why do French musicians and audiences always look like young and radical? Just back from manning  the barricades. Wonderful stuff.

Continuing with the theme of Didier Laloy and Belgians. Here is a Melodeon Monday from Tref.

Estonian three row joy

http://accordeonaire.blogspot.com/2016/03/monday-in-estonia.html

Interesting post - I'd never considered her bass work before (I love this clip!), but now I look at it, it's remarkable. That first tune, she's flying around on the bass end; excellent four finger bass technique. Doesn't look unisonoric to me; a few reasons/thoughts; firstly in the first piece, she's using the main 8 buttons almost exclusively - a unisonoric layout (like mine for example) would require use of at least one of the other pairs to do the sort of lines she's doing (because the flip side of my layout is that you need the A chord (on a D/G) outside the main 8 buttons), and secondly because if you look *really* closely at some sections you'll notice that the G/D pair (D/G speak, I think she's actually playing an A/D box) are doing different bass notes in different directions - but because the technique's so solid, it's really hard to tell. You can tell at the end of the second tune when it slows down though.

Great playing - so good I've never analysed what she's doing before, other than a quick 'I can play that' attempt, where I quickly figured out that 'no, I can't'. One of those musicians where what's she's playing is so musical that you forget the technique that's behind it.

Given the country's size, Belgian accordionism, and for that matter trad French dance are arguably in advance of that in metropolitan France!

Didier and Bruno are doing a week "course" in the Cevenne hills - this sort of stuff but also good food, dance and the odd trip to the river -  in early August ;)

Think she is Norwegian, Gary. 2nd tune is a halling. i've been trying out this sort of thing - playing the chords against crossed basses and moving both on the fly - on my kit, but it only really works in Bb where all the chords are on pull. You get a mix of extended (with 7s) and sus effects. It's best with the 3rds out, and note the absence of any dominant chord. Great for song as it's a very level pavement to sing over. Incredibly any combination works (some form of useful chord) so long as you stay strictly within the Bb diatonic notes.

On main rows - a lot harder as some chords are push, some pull. She is very good at it. Right end not bad either?

I assumed Estonian because the festival is Estonian. Yeah, that right hand is something. I don't know how to describe her approach to rhythm. The Jazz phrase "in the pocket" comes to mind.

If those are not unisonoric basses .... All the more beguiling!!!

I love this YT video too Clive and like Steve C. mentions in this recent thread about her http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,18472.0.html, it is also one of my favourite converted-to-mp3s. See also this thread about her playing from about three years ago http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,10207.0.html.

The first tune - Tversovern (Bow Tie) - is really good (but too short) while the second - Bunadsbrura (Wedding March?) - is fabulous.

I've been traveling, and then had to move house. Here's a return of melodeon Monday with Pignol and Milleret.

The mazurka is Sucré salé … numbril du monde - that long improvised stretch is truly to be savoured! The suite plinn is called Aubade leçon numéro 32 both from their 2004 "Sales Gosses" CD (mucky kids) - source of a large part of their current bal folk repertoire.

Looks like the Mustradem site is back up again (in spanking new livery). Except the boutique links which say "We are currently updating our shop. Thanks for your patience"
