Scottish button accordion players
« on: December 06, 2015, 02:39:12 PM »

Are there any current (or, in the past 40 - 50 years) Scottish button accordion players?  Not the B/C/C# system but single- or two-row?

Thanks.

Ian Cruikshanks   - youtube of him playing a vintage 2 row  ''youtube melodeaonman52 harvest home''. Sir Jimmy Shand recorded uite a number of tracks using a two row hohner Erica   ''youtube jimmy shand melodeon solo'' will bring up a video of him in his 80's playing Oh Gin I were a Barons Heir on the 2 row.

Fred Davidson from Banchory who is unusual among Scottish players because he plays a DG.  He has a delightful, and possibly unique, Hohner pokerwork supplied new with hand made reeds many years ago.

Ali 'Beag' MacLeod plays the 3 row and 2 row, I have not seen him live but have his CD - The Sands Of Achnahaird. This is mostly, if not entirely, on the 2 row (Don’t have it at hand right now to check).

This CD is very good, when I first heard it I could not believe that he was not better known – perhaps he is happy to keep a relatively low profile, in part this may be what allows him to maintain such a traditional authentic sound.

There are several clips of Ali playing the 3 row on YouTube but on this one he uses the 2 row.

Ali lives not far from me, in fact I met up with him at the Sharon Shannon gig in Ullapool recently. He doesn't seem to get around so much these days, which may be a result of his poor hearing, making things difficult for him.
I agree though, a grand player, who sometimes comes to sessions in the Altnacealagach Bar, where there are occasional sessions in the winter.

Màrtainn Skene http://www.skeneband.com/#!ceoladair/c1pt2 mostly plays piano accordion, but also D/G melodeon. He's played for the RSCDS Summer School for several years, and his band played for the Scottish Unis' SCD Festival over the weekend.

whilst I am not a Scottish button box player I play a great many Scottish tunes on 2 and 3 row button boxes!  The 2 row DG is fine for a lot of stuff including some in A but  its easier and more basefull ?!  to shift some over into D or G.  The 2 row BC is fine but with the exeption of the rare double ray with 12 'stradella' is not very bassfull.

Hmmm, remind me of this, nearer the time. I could always nip down in the camper. Only about 100 miles away.
