Campbell's Melodeon
« on: January 01, 2016, 01:11:09 PM »

Some one who ought to know better has purchased a little one row three stopper off EBay as a gift for me. It was advertised as probably 1960ish, but to my uneducated eye looks a lot older. The name Campbell is embossed on the stop nobs.I believe Campbell's was a Glasgow firm who imported instruments in the early part of the 20th century. It hasn't arrived yet and the seller doesn't know what key it's in. Any idea when Campbell's closed? It might give some idea of the age.

I think I recall reading somewhere that Campbell & Co closed sometime during WW2. If German imports (and not just melodeons) were a large part of their trade, this makes sense, though perhaps more remarkable is that they survived WW1....

Brian, you really have caught MAD I'm sure it's infectious.
 Wasn't Campbell's ( Edinburgh?) a department store?

Steve, thanks for alerting me to the earlier thread. I don't think there are any bells or whistles on the Gift Box. No one has said anything too disparaging about the Campbell imports so I'm hoping that the build quality won't be too bad.The earlier thread seems to suggest it could be late 19th century. I've just noticed a small brass (?) plate saying 'Made in Germany', do Saxony boxes carry that, or are they marked 'Made in Saxony'?

many Saxony boxes do have made in Germany on, it gives them more "Street Cred" .. I hope its one of the better ones Brian, it`ll be interesting regardless ..
