New melodeon
« on: January 14, 2016, 08:29:28 AM »

Melodeon, wife, wife, melodeon...it's a tricky one isn't it.

Got separated at Christmas, which was a bit of a downer. :( But since we're selling up, I thought I'd take the opportunity to treat myself, so I just ordered a Streb. Result. :D

We'll be staying friends and bandmates, so it's not all bad.

But I now have the awful problem of choosing a layout. Is a 12-bass three-row a no-brainer, or is less sometimes more?

With the Streb, there will be minimal weight difference, and you can programme the keys as you wish.
Unless you know you will be 100% satisfied with just 2.5 row, 8 bass, I would go for the full job.
(Well that was my logic when I was considering buying a Streb anyway!!)

You may find some of the recent threads about 3 row layouts also useful.

Cheers Andy, makes sense! (I have no experience beyond an 8-bass two-row, so I wanted to check I wasn't missing something.)

You could also, I suppose, choose a new wife while you're at it. But note: you don't get a choice of layouts, it's all pretty standard. And there may well be a weight difference, one way or the other, so choose carefully!

I hear that amongst the younger generation there is now an extended trial period available. Sometimes even side by side comparisons.

Probably take less time to get a new wife than a new Streb….. ;)

Same thing, less buttons to be pressed, but MUST be pressed in the right order.

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Slightly dodgy banter aside ... yes a 3 row 12 bass is a no brainer!

BJG: I got the 3 row 14 bass model.  Not much difference in price.  I am a BC player and don't play bass much.  I was concerned that the 3 three treble rows might be confusing to me but it wasn't.  I am mostly a mandolin player at and at one point bought a 5 string electric mandolin which I found confusing to play because the C string is on top. But I took to playing the outside 2 rows on the Streb just fine. I have mine tuned BCC# but don't really use the C# row for anything. I say go for it.  Charlie

Sorry I meant to say 3 row 12 bass model.  There is no 14 bass.  Charlie
