DERBYSHIRE Playgroup
« on: January 25, 2016, 10:24:14 PM »

OK folks, it’s time to announce another beginners Melodeon Playgroup.

This one will be in Derbyshire at the Miners Standard in the village of Winster – yes, the home of the Gallop. The date for your diary is Saturday 15th October and the format will be as per the original Playgroup i.e. informal, no pressure to perform and all aimed towards beginners wanting to boost their playing confidence. Costs will be low but the quality will be high. We have Mel Biggs and Steve Dumpleton Ollie King as tutors and both will be planning their classes/coaching sessions in the coming months so keep an eye out for details.

I shall set up a Facebook page for the event but will keep updates coming here too.

In the mean time have a look at the Pubs web site (www.theminersstandard.com) and note that they have a camp site and do very reasonable sounding B+B. There is a Premier Inn opening soon in Matlock and the Derbyshire Dales has an abundance of other accommodation options.  Feel free to book rooms as the Playgroup will happen!

For non players, or if you wanted to add a day or 2 onto your stay, there is sooooo much to do in the area. Highlights include the Peak District National Park, Chatsworth House, Bakewell (home of the pudding (it’s not a tart)), Cromford (birthplace of the industrial revolution) and a number of steam trains, tram museums and other relics from the industrial past.

In keeping with the Playgroup way there is no need to book, register or pay up front for the day but it would be useful to know if you are interested so please PM me. Feel free to ask questions too.

That will do for now but I will keep updating as things come together.

Simon.

Excellent plan, thanks for setting this up, Simon!

Definitely going straight into my calendar.

I'm in Thorpe, so this is pretty much local for me.

The Miner's Standard was also the venue for ECMW (English Country Music Workshop) the year before last and the year before that. It proved to be a very suitable sort of venue for this type of event.

You forgot about The Winster Processional  :o

According to Wikipedia (whatever reliance you place on that...) a Bakewell Tart and a Bakewell Pudding are two distinct things with the tart being a variant of the pudding

Miners' Standard... now unless my memory is playing tricks, that's the pub where a surly bastard behind the bar was doing his best to avoid serving anyone but his regulars (Morris dancers especially unwelcome) a couple of years back. It seems to have mixed reviews - most people liked it, but a few seem to have had very bad experiences.
Living within commuting distance of Winster (Derby) I'm definitely interested, but with slight reservations about the choice of pub.
BTW, Winster is still home to Winster Morris Men, whose repertoire runs to rather more than just Winster Gallop.
Also home to Winster Secret Gardens (mid-July), a treat for gardening enthusiasts who don't mind a bit of hill-walking.
Bakewell pudding is said (in Bakewell) to have originated when someone mixed up the instructions for a Bakewell Tart. Bit of an improvement on the original, in my opinion.
And yes, loads of assorted tourist attractions in the area around.

Mmmm...certainly not my experience at the ECMW a couple of years ago...very helpful staff, good food and good beer...but they could perhaps have done with a couple more staff...as to morris dancers I seem to remember plenty of photos of aforementioned Winster Morris on display...which would suggest some link or other.... :|glug

Hi Folks.

Thanks to those that have got back to me showing an interest in the event. There now looks like there will be more than me and 2 tutors on the day.

I was at both the ECMW weekends and thought the staff handled the crowds very well, they were also keen to have Playgroup there. Anyway, I suspect we will be a somewhat smaller event so hopefully service at the bar will not be an issue.

Hello folks,

Derbyshire Playgroup update time:
Firstly, there has been a steady trickle of people expressing interest. Thank you for the support and keep it coming. Get the 15th Oct in your diaries and make some plans to come visit for the weekend.
Secondly, Steve has had to pull out as one of the teachers but fear not, Mr Ollie King is joining Mel and will be taking the intermediates.
Next update should include a Facebook page as that seems to be the done thing nowadays but in the mean time let me know if you are interested in coming of if you have any questions.

Yes - so sorry I can't do it but I have an unavoidable clash on that day.

@sue.
No Facebook page yet but hopefully soon. I know a number of people here don't do FB so I will duplicate all the relevant info on Mel.net for all to see. Any questions though please ask away.

Hello again.

We are now just a few weeks away from the Playgroup and there has been a steady flow of people committing to the event. Mel and Ollie are preparing there workshops and I hope to share details of these soon along with the full timetable.
The day will start at 9 and official proceedings will end at 5.30 but after dinner there will be a slow and steady session in the pub. The day will be similar to the Evesham Playgroups where there will be workshops, a chance to play something in front of a sympathetic audience and most importantly a chance to socialise and share with people in a similar state as you.
The pub will be selling food and ale throughout the day and Pete from Acorn will be there with his stall of melodeon temptations. Give him a call if there is something specific you would like him to bring.
Whilst there is no need to register or book it does help settle my nerves (and allow the pub to plan food) if you let me know if you plan on coming.
We have a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Derbyshire-Melodeon-Playgroup-269249080076214/ and you can contact me through that or here on the forum if you have any questions or want to come.
Hope to meet a few of you on Oct 15th.

I can now tell you what the workshop titles are and a little about them.

Mel will be teaching a workshop called "Melodeon for Starters" and it is designed to take you on a journey of discovery using her own left hand in approach to learning. It is suitable for absolute beginners upwards and those who are unsure about using the bass end.

Ollie's workshop is called "Getting the most out of your D row". He will be using the tune Old Tom of Oxford to show you the most efficient way to play on the D row, including crossing rows etc, all aimed to enable you to get the right chords.

As always, there will be a chance to meet new people, play a few tunes and generally have a good day messing about with melodeons in a pub. What's not to love about that?

I have had a few folks contacting me about camping/camper vans at the weekend. The Miners Standard has said both are fine (they have a proper camp site with toilets, showers etc) but could people please contact them direct to book (01629 650279).

It might also be worth pointing out that I have not organised anything for the Sunday. As this is the first running in Derbyshire I thought I would start small and limit it to one day however, I'm sure if anybody wants to get together at the pub in the morning they will be fine with this.

As always, if you are interested in coming for the workshops please let me know so I can plan the day but there is no official booking process etc.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon,

Si
