Great event. Many thanks to Simon, Mel, Ollie and Peter (Acorn). Also, to Penny for travelling so far to support this new Playgroup. Most of all, everyone got stuck in and supported each other with the usual sense of humour. Finally, I liked the pub - the staff were welcoming and even the regulars seemed to like our "sound".  So, it lived up to the Melodeon Playgroup Brand.
Now, Evesham to anticipate and the date is eagerly awaited!
I wonder whether anyone might like to venture up to a Northern version in the Borders, eg Newcastle area!

I have brought pirate metal to the world. Lovely :)

And it's not that far. I live in Essex, my parents and in-laws live in Devon, and I go to Blackpool every year. A four-hour drive is a pretty regular occurrence for us.

Only just been registered as a member here so can only add my thanks now. It was a great day and inspired me to upgrade to a Serenellini Lady. I'm looking forward to bringing her to the next Derbyshire Playgroup. Any ideas when that might be?

I'm really pleased you were inspired by the day and thank you for coming along.
I am sort of thinking about the next one and I guess I would aim for the same weekend (the one before October half term begins) but I'm not sure about the venue. The staff were great, locals friendly and plenty of accommodation choices but the second room was a bit, well, snug really. So assuming that a few more folk might come along, I recon we will need a bigger pub. Currently searching and testing them to find the One.  :|glug

Your suggested date looks good for next year. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and staff at the Miners Standard and hope that you could somehow keep it in Winster. I've sent a PM.

OK, so the Derbyshire Playgroup is back!  :|||:
October 14th and once again in Winster near Matlock but this time we will base the day around the rooms of the Burton Institute before moving to the Miners Standard pub for dinner and a session.
Your tutors for the day will be Mel Biggs and Steve Dumpleton and we will also be joined by Pete from Acorn with his stall of things to try and buy.
The format will follow the now well established Playgroup format of workshops aimed at beginners along with the opportunity to play in front of or with a sympathetic audience in an evening session.
I will get the facebook page up and running as well as keep update coming here too.
Hope to see some of you in October.

Just a reminder that we are all go for the second running of the Derbyshire Playgroup. Oct 14th in Winster, Derbyshire.

I haven't posted any updates recently as there isn't anything to up date really, the tutors are booked, the venue is sorted and Acorn Instruments will be supporting too. Several people have booked into the Miners Standard Pub, who also offer camping and parking for vans, but I here tell of a Melodeon doss house which Nigel is coordinating. Contact him direct if you are interested.

As with all the Playgroups, the aim is for beginners to experience a couple of workshops delivered by top tutors in a friendly, relatively informal setting and hopefully by the end of the day they will feel confident enough to join in with a nice and slow session in the evening. Its also a great opportunity to meet a group of folks of a similar level who you will more than likely continue to meet up with at other festivals and workshops.

In the sprit of playgroup there is no need to register or book but it would be nice if you were to let me know if you are hoping to come along. Similarly, if you have any questions please ask away.

Just a few weeks to go now so the tutors are busy preparing their workshops and I hope to have any material to learn up very soon.
The itinerary for the day (14th Oct) will be:
9.30 – 10.00: Welcome, introduction, admin.
10.00 - 10.15: Order lunch
10.15– 12.00: Workshop session 1
      Mel with Beginners
      Steve with Better Beginners
12.00 – 1.30: Lunch(bring your own pack up or go to the pub)/social time and a good chance to look and fondle the lovely kit from Acorn Instruments.
1.30 – 2.00: Regroup and Party Pieces
2.00 – 4.00: Workshop 2
4.00 – 4.45: Melodeon autopsy / social time and more kit fondling
4.45 – 5.15: Final chance for your party piece.
5.15 – 5.30: Close, goodbyes and thanks.
Move to the Miners Standard pub
7.00 - …: Dinner and Steady Session.

There are still places if you are interested and there is no formal booking or deposits although it would be nice if you let me know if you are coming.

This is a great opportunity to meet and play in a relaxed friendly environment before dipping your toes in the world of bigger music workshops, sessions and events. Don't be shy!

Great News Simon.
Some players staying in Winster have arranged to meet for an evening meal in the Miners Standard at 8pm on the Friday night.  It will be followed by an informal session in a dedicated room. Everyone and all instruments are welcome. We'll order food from the bar menu. Last orders for meals are normally taken at 8.15pm but the landlady might be slightly flexible. It would be advisable for latecomers to check by phoning the pub (01629650279) or texting me (07767215532).

Steve has now given me his workshop material and they are all great tunes which many of you will already be familiar with. The level is aimed at improving beginners to intermediate.

There are four tunes:
1. Speed The Plough
2. Harry Gidley’s Waltz
3. Bear Dance
4. Rochdale Coconut Dance (spare tune for if time allows)

Participants should at least try to familiarise themselves with the tunes but full learning/fluency is not expected. We will work on that on the day and explore the many possibilities which the tunes offer for both melody and basses/chords.

Steve has provided me with dots and a few notes for each tune. If you are planning on coming to playgroup and would like the material let me know here or on the Facebook page and I will send it to you.

cheers.

Just a few days to go now but it isn't too late to come along. No booking needed, just drop me a message if you are interested.

Also, a reminder that Pete from Acorn Instruments (www.acorninstruments.co.uk) is once again supporting the event so if you have any specific requests for instruments you would like him to bring for a demo, please contact him direct and discuss. He also does a fine, and justifiably popular, range of gig bags as well as replacement wooden finger boards for Hohner's which allow you to easily reduce button travel.

To those that are coming, if you have a music stand it would be worth bringing it along as well as a pen and a jotter. We will have tea/coffee at the venue but if you want anything specialist then you had best bring it yourself. Lunch wise, you are welcome to bring your own or you order from the pub on the day. There is also a small village shop. I'll post some maps and a parking guide later so watch this space.

It was a brilliant weekend. Many thanks to Simon, Mel and Steve with the usual support from Pete (Acorn). It was sad about Mel's Car but, thankfully, no-one was hurt and beloved boxes were not burnt. My Melodeon "doss" house (as described by Simon) proved to be a wonderful place and I've already booked it for the Play Group weekend in 2018!
Now eagerly anticipating the 2018 date for the first and original Play Group in Bretforton.
Finally, planning of the 2018 North East Play Group started today.
It's a grand life.

Gee Si, you're offering to do one specially for me? No, I've provisionally booked my "house" with options on  October weekends should you decide to do one next year and it's in October. I didn't want to lose the possible opportunity of using this house.

Yes, it was indeed a lovely day. I enjoyed being a part of it. Thank you to Simon and Nigel for organising it and for asking me to be a tutor.

It was sad about Mel's Car but, thankfully, no-one was hurt and beloved boxes were not burnt.
This is a reference to the dramatic events which happened just after lunch. A car parked in Main Street went on fire due to an electrical fault. As we were walking down the hill from the pub back to the village, we could see a thick plume of black smoke rising. We got to the street corner and saw the fire which had become very intense very rapidly. Mel's car was parked right next to it and obvious that the fire was likely to spread to it. As there were small explosions happening, as well as the intense heat, it became clear that it was simply too dangerous to approach to try to move Mel's car out of the way. The fire brigade came within ten minutes but not before the fire had spread not only to Mel's car but also to a couple of the adjacent buildings, shattering windows and damaging the window frames and some of the stone-work.

It was all very dramatic, not to mention traumatic for poor Mel. I don't know how she managed to hold it together to return to teach for the afternoon and the following day, but she did. What a heroine!
