Spelling moved from: Carrying Melodeons

So whats wrong with the Music Room double shoulder strap bag then?
There's loads of them about. So many in fact you have to personalize your own to recognize it
(I hate the American spelling we get on here can you do something? Theo)
Suits my Saltarelle fine. Extra pocket for cd's, papers etc.
I can get a bottle of coke (beer) and a sweater in there too. :||:

Hi Chas,

I don't have any problem spelling personalise with an 's'.  Could you explain how you are being made to spell it with a 'z'?

Incidentally my Chambers dictionary gives both spellings :o

Use Firefox and load the UK English dictionary. Then it puts a red wiggly line under anything it doesn't like.  >:E

Well that's American spelling. Hope I'm not telling you something you already know, but the Americans distinguish between -ize and -ise spellings. I'm fairly sure about this (and can't be arsed to look it up) words deemed to be derived from Greek would take -ize, and words derived from Latin would take -ise, following the spelling conventions of those languages.

The difficulty is a) that it's hard to remember that supervise, advertise, etc. never take a z and b) that there are zillions of newly coined words that have nothing with Greek but get the -ize treatment. In other words -ize for everything except that by virtue of their obvious Latin origin or maybe tradition have to take -ise.

At some point the Brits* must have decided that this was too hard to deal with and so opted for everything -ise. A much easier rule to follow.

* Well most of them. If you look for example at Collins English Dictionary (the first edition of which I worked on briefly) you'll see that they favour a mid-Atlantic style, with the -ize variants given first. In other words, if you go with your spell-checker and put personalize you can always claim Collins as justification.

Cheers
Steve

The forum spell check does not add a red line under questionable spellings so it must be either your browser, or more likely your PC that is doing the spell check, not the forum software. So the solution is to change the spelling dictionary for your browser, or PC.

You can confirm this for yourself by typing 'personalise' in a word processor, or some other application on your PC.

To run the forum's own spell check click the 'Spell Check" button below the box where you enter your message.  I've just done that after entering this message and it accepts 'personalise' for me.

-ize is also an Oxford thing. The Compact Oxford Dictionary gives -ize first, followed by (also -ise). Inspector Morse would insist on -ize over -ise.

Get the British English dictionary, if you want British English spelling. It accepts both personalise and personalize, but it doesn't like color, or sidewalk.
