Calum's Road
« on: February 07, 2016, 12:27:08 PM »

Dear All,
Thought I'd break my silence for a change.
I've been really taken with the tune ukebert used when demonstrating his new Bergflodt melodeon a little while back. I just love the tune!
Thought I'd give it a go...... my version of Calum's road.

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Nice!! I like the way you play it with that slight swing and it sounds great on your Bb/Eb box.
I love this tune. I also love the island of Raasay - I was there a couple of years ago with a gathering of bass clarinettists and I hope to be there again soon. We have our own version of the tune for bass clarinet ensemble, arranged by Sarah Watts.

Here's the start of Calum's Road;

Steve, do you like minimalist music? A couple of my GCSE students have written excellent minimalist pieces for clarinet ensembles - if you want to have a go, let me know.

Oh, thanks Steve!
I somehow 'hear' it with a slight swing, though I know some of my local sessionists prefer it 'straight'. Glad you like it!
Never been to the isle, but the picture you've posted feels like the wheelbarrow was left after the bothers finished the road all those years ago.
I love the clarinet ensemble...... such a lovely throaty sound and another good way to play the tune - just great!
cheers

It is a wonderful tune (:) Of special resonance for me because it was played at the funeral of a friend of mine, Calum Burt.

Apart from Calum's Road, the island of Raasay is also notable for being the birthplace of the Scots Gaelic poet Sorley MacLean. Check out his poem Hallaig for some great imagery.
