"Now obsolete" HC Pokerwork
« on: February 20, 2016, 03:33:43 PM »

Good afternoon to you all.

I joined this forum to try to work out why the accordion I recently bought seemed to have a tuning I couldn't find online.

Melodeon.net found me the answer, simply through viewing their "2 button keyboard layout" - it's an :

IRISH STYLE (chromatic) 2 ROW BUTTON ACCORDION
B/C 21 buttons old Hohner layout (this layout is now obsolete).

Many thanks for this melodeon.net!

So now, I'm wondering how many others are out there with the same accordion, what songs have been composed & written on it and why it is now obsolete?

All the best,

Matt

Welcome to the forum!

The only thing obsolete is the bass side layout. The right hand side has the same layout that all B/C players today use. It's a popular layout for Irish and I guess Scottish music.

The "obsolete" bass layout was designed for playing in the keys of B and the key of C where most B/C players are playing in the keys of D and G so the basses have been changed to better fit those keys.

Good on ya Sean,

I don't suppose you'd know of any songs/recordings that would've been made on such an instrument?

Thanks again,

Matt

got a couple here! some of the older (hohner?) B/C accordions have good reeds.
...and some are buggered  (:)

you could be historically correct and get hold of one of these booklets from years ago, (see pic) or....just play the melodies/tunes with the right hand side. there are contributors on here that could retune your basses/chords as the need arises.
