Theo  given the reed configuration and quality on a mid fifties 114 , would it be possible/practical to take a C box down to Bb ?

Given its popularity in Cajun and Zydeco circles I'd guess "perhaps..." :|glug

Rees might know...

I've converted a 6 button Chanson Kids Melodeon from C to Bb so I'm sure you could do it with a melodeon with proper reeds in it  ;)

Got it, impractical and not cost effective to retune 4 banks .

Shouldn't think a new set of reeds plus fitting and tuning would be cheap....

You could load the reed tips to take the pitch down a tone.  It's not something I've done, but the reed playing quality might be affected.

Hi Brian!

If you put your two 114 posts together, you have another (to me) obvious route ... have your 114 in G converted to Bb.

Look at the scales of G and Bb and it's a pretty straightforward conversion with just four extra reeds required at the 'top end'... a great many of the notes are common to both Bb and G and you just move the reedplates along one position + tune as required with semi-tone soldering for less than half the notes/tongues.

... the Basses and chords are easy to source from any Bb/Eb Club/Erika type box

At the same time, you would get a currently unrestored 114 completely cleaned, rewaxed and fine-tuned.... any of the tuners/fettlers would be able to do this for you...

cheers!

Mike

Hi Brian,

If not exactly 'easy', it is a pretty straightforward key switch ... I've sent you an email ...

cheers
