Sidmouth Folk Week 2009
« on: June 08, 2009, 03:59:17 PM »

New thread for Sidmouth Folk Week.
John Kirkpatrick will be running his "Big Band" series of workshops.
I shall try and make them all anyone else thinking of going?

I'll be there, Stewarding at the Manor. I'm aiming to get to the Big Band for Ceilidhs workshops, possibly the kirkpatrick big band as well, squeezy's workshops, a handful of concerts and lots and lots of sessions.

There is nothing terrible about beng a Sidmouth virgin - rare, perhaps, but not terrible!  >:E

Grabs his tin hat and runs for cover...

This'll be my 10th year without a break - which I expect is peanuts, compared to some on here.

Never mind the specific workshops (which I'm sure will be great - but are always just SO early in the morning if you first have to negotiate the rigours of campsite life, having previously been up till all hours of the morning!), I consider a week in The Radway as being one long continuous English music workshop. So many new tunes to learn, or old ones to refresh.

This'll be my 7th Sidmouth I think? With one year break. Might be 8th.

This will be the fortieth anniversary of my first visit, although there was a period from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s when I was too busy with outdoor pursuits and mountain and cave rescue work to attend. I don't think I have missed a year since I left the rescue team.

You mean people actually get up early enough to go to the workshops?  I thought they were just there to fill up the programme!

I think someone on the organising committee must be 'melodeon-friendly' because the melodeon workshops at Sidmouth tend to be late morning or in the afternoon. Poor Nick and Mary Barber tend to get the short straw of the early morning slot for their ceilidh band workshops.

They are good fun though, I'd recommend them. They always play such interesting (and nice) tunes.

The sessions are as good as ever, if not better! Most of the venues are as they were except that the Arena Showground has gone. I think the overall effect of the changes has been to make the atmosphere more like it was before the Mrs. Casey/Rocking Horse outfit commercialised it. I look forward to it more than any other festival in the year, but others will, of course, have different preferences.

Still good - and it's always good to see so many friends in such a glorious setting - but, different. Not so much variety and pomp and splendour IMO.

I miss having the Arena to hang out in - just sitting on the grass watching the dancing, or browsing the stalls, or attending the big spectacular shows. Also, I very much miss the daily 12-2 and 5 -7 English Music Sessions that used to be held in the Arena Bar - led by such as Flos Headford and Rees Wesson, Andy Turner and Matt Green, Taz Tarry, etc. Made a change from just being in The Radway, and was good to be able to play in the outdoors - as well as to be joined by passing musicians who were playing for the morris at the Arena. Made some friends there.

I expect Rees will remember the time when it rained so heavily that there was a virtual river running right through the middle of the session! (the Bar was a covered area with open canopy). Ah, happy days  :|||:

Aye, that was a damp one!

This year, us musical instrument traders have been moved from the Ham to Blackmore Gardens, near the ceilidh tent. Not a popular move with the traders, as the Ham was such an excellent venue.
I'm not sure how things will pan out, but we may be able to organise an open air session at the new location.

Well at least those bloody concerts won't get in the way of trying to play all those lovely new melodeons this year then >:E!

Nice one Dazbo. Bloody concerts. Why spend all that money when you could be in the Radway or the Volunteer or the Ship or the Bedford or the Yacht Club or still asleep in your tent?  >:E >:E

Perhaps there will be less starving and furious wasps this year...

An open air session at the Blackmore Gardens would be brilliant - I'm up for it.
