Yes, shouldn't have been trying it in A minor.

It seems to be a variant of the Sephardic song "Hija mia querida".

Thanks Bob - yes that's it. Sorry, I've not been using this laptop for a few days, so I haven't been able to respond earlier, thus possibly seeming impolite. Yes, I am an habitué of The Chemic Tavern!  ;D

Tufty, that was downright good.

Even though the opening of "Hija mia querida" is almost note-for-note the same, I'd never have noticed it without the dots, and the punch you put into it makes it even less recognizable.

Nice track! Always interesting to see tunes seeming to "leak" from place to place. I like Kite because it is easy to play but still sounds fancy!

Yes, Tufty, that is Kite Schottische. When you heard it at Whitby, it was probably being played in the Yacht Club by myself and other members of Les Panards Dansants, since it has a prominent place in our repertoire.

The Kite was recorded in track 4 on the CD Chaos in One by the Hastings-based band Banjax, led by the late, great melodeon player Dave Roberts, in 1992. I was a member of Banjax and recall that The Kite was composed by band member Keith Leech. This is confirmed in the sleeve notes where copyright is attributed to Keith. Keith is well aware that the tune has found favour quite widely and I feel sure he wouldn't mind too much if his authorship is overlooked. However, there it is. Everyone down here knows it to be Keith's tune, unless he has been having us all on!

Thanks for that information, Peter, and welcome to the forum. I'll inform the other members of our band so that we can give credit to the composer in future.

This takes me back to the great Euro sessions at Whitby! (:)
Joy - I've taken the liberty of correcting a couple of syntax errors in the ornaments in your ABC which were causing a couple of hiccups. Corrected bits in green.

The tune is also given with minor differences in the tunebook 'Les Panards Dansants' from the Hebden Bridge Euro music and dance sessions. I'm sure Bob Ellis will be along shortly to give more details.  ;)

Thanks Steve for correcting my 1.a.m. carelessness!    It seemed to play ok for me, maybe my ears were being careless too!    (:)  A good tune.
