Shand Morino
« on: June 12, 2009, 07:51:13 PM »

I know all you B/C/C# players will cringe at the very thought but.......................

I have been asked by a customer for a Shand Morino in A/D/G. Does such a beastie exist?

Hmm.

Chocolate teapot
Ashtray for motorbike
Chicken lips
Rocking horse sh*t

All of the above are readily available but can I find a Shand Morino in A/D/G?  >:E

Debatable. I reckon an A/D/G with a stradella bass would be to Jimmy Shand what Woodbines were to Churchill.

I'll get me coat.

On a serious note, there was never a shand morino made in A/D/G in the factory.  Whether one has been altered since then is possible.  But I think it would pretty much defeat the purpose of the Shand Morino if it was altered.

The idea of the Morino was to compete with any proffesional piano accordion in the the Scottish Dance scene, giving a bigger and better sound than the current 2 row models of the day.  B/C/C# gives it the versatility (spell check please) and flexability to play any tune in any key accross the 3 rows.

Also whats the point in 120 basses for 3 keys???

Okay an inherently pointless, meaningless "define your terms" sort of question, but are there any contenders to higher rank on the push-pull accordions tree than the Shand Morino?

(Grey Paolo for one? Any one-rows with legendary status? A Briggs?)

Hi

Accordions of London has this Brandoni offering.  What is under the hood of this two row?  Gold??

http://www.accordionsoflondon.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage2&product_id=337&category_id=17&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=26

Also among the BCC# models currently being made, the Fantini Sharino seems to have a quality approaching that of the Shand Morino.  Any comments?

I've had a shot of the Sharino a couple of times.  It is big, heavy, lacks dynamics and sounds cheap.  The only people that I have found to like them have paid a fair bit to sort them out like change the air button or tune it to sound better.  It's expensive and isn't anywhere near the standard of a Shand Morino.

Paolo's, Supersalis, Gaelics, Crucianelli, borsini, exselsiour plus loads more are a thousand leagues more comfortable and sound better than the Sharino...In my opinion.

By the way, Crucianelli are going to be making 72 bass 3 rows B/C/C# (made in Europe) http://www.steveclinkscalemusic.co.uk/products.php?cat=8  I'll be getting a shot of one when it comes in.

That'd be good - just for comparison's sake - though I'm saving my pennies for your Gaelic ;D

Gaelic is better value for money.  Crucianelli is only 2 voice.  Aimed to be lighter

...why, it makes my 1930s Baldoni, Bartoli look almost tasteful!  ;D

In Irish music circles, those 1930s Baldoni, Bartoli boxes have something of a cult following - and you should hear the noise they make!  :||:

For Cajun music, the old Monarch & Sterling one-row 4-stops.

Staying closer to the topic - not so legendary (because nobody's seen one - they're pretty much all in Germany & Switzerland), but of superb quality, would be the Morino Club boxes that Hohner made. There's a member of this forum (in the US) looking to sell one at the moment, which was worked on by Jimmy Shand Jnr in 1986 and converted to B/C/D:

To be fair it is a two row with Stradella bass, which is unusual. I'm not sure what the advantage in that would be over fitting an extra C# row though. And the price is insane no matter what the box is.

One could get a brand spanking new Fantini-Sharino BCC# with all the knobs on for less than that kind of money! I know which I'd rather have.
