I have never had a problem with a Canadian product called Weldbond. It is a PVA, but seems stronger and with a faster grab than the run of the mill PVAs generally "available at all good hardware stores". I've used it on 3 or 4 plastic frames over the years and it hasn't let me down yet (famous last words...) and I now use it with the more common wooden frames too.

Glues!
I've used a hard plastics glue (Bostick Glu & Fix) after experimenting with some plastic and card. Clamped it for 12 hrs and it seems to have worked. The existing glue looks similar ( clear, hard). I decided against PU (gorilla) because it looks like it's difficult to use and I'd need to experiment with it to learn how to manage it. I was also worried about not being able to undo it. My next stop would have been the acrylic based stuff, as this seems to be recommended for plastics. The world of glue is a complicated but fascinating place.

Yes I'm kind of with you on that. Maybe next time I stick (sorry) to PVA.

I am new here. I know I make a mistake, try to make new bellows to a toy melodeum, just for fun, but. . .  you know

Read that someone used kellogs carton
I intend to use milk carton
OK - so what adhesive is best?

Glue gun, PVA, heating, super glue, Titebond or any other.

Hello Stockaryd

Milk and other cartons are often waxed or coated to make them waterproof, this might cause a problem with the adhesive not sticking, better to experiment before spending a lot of time cutting out and folding the bellows - or you could write to the carton makers (TetraPak is a major manufacturer) to see what they use in their manufacture - I suspect these may be heat or pressure cured adhesives or coatings, only available industrially.

Probably easier to use an absorbent card like Kelloggs cartons and traditional adhesives like PVA

See my thread on a recent re-tape of a Hohner Erica where I detatched the plastic frames to allow for a full re-tape of the end folds - http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,18277.0.html . I used Charlie Marshall's (CGM) bellows tape glue which seems to be a thick PVA type substance to do it. It makes a strong bond but allows for some moving of the parts before it sets. It works fine.

When I was contemplating having a go at making a new set of bellows, I too thought about using cereal box corners.  For repairing, they seem to be ideal, but it's only the bend that is really utilised to seal an already strong material which has torn at it's weakest point. However, I don't think they would be rigid enough to endure the relatively high pressures, and might collapse when played at all hard.

Well,  . . .
I wish to take advantage of the folds of the milk carton + I have many milk cartons  :|glug
They seem to be coated in som kind of plastic. I contacted Tetra Pac. They had no answere! ? ! They did not know.
In the 60s, I worked one summer at a dairy. They used to heat and pressure.

I tested the super glue. It worked poorly.
Have not tried superglue gel. Would it be tight enough?
Have tested the glue gun,  -   promising. Tight  -but will it last?
PVA seems promising, but will it last when playing?
The problem is - it must hold tight in the long run - it must be tight
Has anyone tested the milk carton yourself?

I know GCM,
but tomorrow Thursday I visit a bookbinding shop in Copenhagen. (paperworld)
Thick pva glue is interesting. ( Should I say sounds interesting )
As it is a toy, I dont think I will play that hard (I can't play that well  ;)  )

Later on I will ask about where to buy metalcorners for an very old Gessner.

What has happened to the original bellows for the toy melodeon?

They are still in place.   Just need a little more air.   -  And a challenge.    (:)

They are not looking toooo good , but OK.

Understood.

The underlying bellows (cardboard) seems to be quite good once you get rid of all the paper and tape, etc. The cloth gussets seem firmly glued.

But getting down to the bare cardboard takes a long time. And messy ???
