It'd be boring if they won all the time... I always found it pleasingly ironic that we start our matches by singing "then like my dreams they fade and die; fortune's always hiding..."  ;)

It's a football thing. West Ham. I guess true love is not built on achievement but effort and heart.

Ah - football: an area where my ignorance is surpassed only by my indifference.  Thanks for the explanation.

A great tune, you play it beautifully. Likewise your other videos, I've watched them many times.

Dear God, thank you for helping me get and play the melodeon and harmonica. I am extremely grateful for these gifts! Amen.

Today I have recorded Wooden Heart (Muss I Denn) on my Accordiola Mundinger Diaton III Grand Luxe club accordion. :D

Enjoy! :D

Here's "Love Laughs at Locksmiths", from the HSJ Jackson manuscript, Wyresdale,Lancs.1823.
The title is a quote from a Shakespeare sonnet and I've prefaced the video with a 19th Century cartoon with the same title.

Makes me ashamed of my avoidance of push pull.

You need to get waggling then!

The grand thing about melodeons (compared with accordions) is that we have the options to play both smooth cross-row style and push/pull style, depending on what the music needs. Mixing and matching both ways of playing should be part of our melodeon technique. If you are able, try to listen and watch Brian Peters' playing - he is a master at blending the two styles.

Here's couple for starters:

Edited to add video links.

Makes me ashamed of my avoidance of push pull.

I realise I could have used more uni-directional runs in this one - it's a choice every time.
You may have noticed that an occasional D pull on the half row creeps in to avoid having to move to a push D chord on the left hand.  This has become a bit of a habit over the years and it matches using a pull A on the G row when playing in D.

Steve, thanks for the comment.  The tune is from the repertoire of The English String Band where I play double bass so it's new to me on melodeon but it's quite simple and nevertheless comes out as "controlled" unlike some of my ToTM playing.

In response to a PM I've added the notation with some notes on the bass line as an attachment.

A quick go at Nino Rota's 1968 film theme from Romeo and Juliet,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrMzw5P0ugQ

Played on a G/C/# Van der Aa... and I'm not quite sure what the key turns out to be. A minor I think. Quite tricky - uses all the main chords and throws in a F in the B part for good measure.

Cheers,

Clive

One of the early contributors to this forum was a witty, informed lady who went by the name "Waltham." In 2009 she left our company because of "an annoying neurological problem" that made her unable to continue playing at what she regarded as a satisfactory level. Her departure was a source of sadness for all of us who valued her pithy remarks, common sense, and knowledge of the melodeon and its music. In her farewell post she gave a link to her recording of a lovely Playford tune called Love's Triumph. Here, along with fondest recollections of Waltham, is my version:

Ooh, that's a rather nice tune I haven't come across before, and well played (:)

Here's my contribution to the theme; the Black Joke. I've known this tune for a very long time, having grown up dancing to it, and it's one of my all-time favourite tunes. I always remembered this tune where I managed to forget a lot of the others I danced to as a teenager. It's also one of the first I learnt when taking up the box and starting to play with Cardiff Morris. I've finally reworked it a bit to make it a bit more fun to play, and I'm playing it on my new D/G Erika I recently received back from Mike Rowbotham; which I am totally in love with playing.

I know it is a little bit too late but it fits into the category "love song". "The Briar And The Rose" by Tom Waits.
