Tune of the Month for April 2016: Hole in the Wall
« on: April 01, 2016, 12:51:52 AM »

Here's this month's winner, The Hole in the Wall - as ably demostrated on the Boxtet blog by Ollie King, here we have him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEAe0fhb8os

Sounds to me like there's one or two accidentals in this one (Eb in G in particular), so you're going to be restricted by what your box can do; whether you have accidentals or not, or if they're in the right direction. You can sub them out of course... with a B maybe, but really more or less anything as long as you play your substitute note with confidence like you meant it :-)

Happy playing - off to learn this one myself :-)

Cheers,

Clive

A couple of takes, one on the inside and one the outside row.

https://youtu.be/3_Nt2B2Hdgw

I used to play this on a p.a. for Wolsey Dance Group to 'process on' to dance Playford in the early 1980's. Had to work it out on paper before coming to grips with ways to play the tune on a melodeon, (even despite the excellent example video).

All the best

Although I didn't actually vote for this one, I have known this tune for a number of years so thought I should post my version.

Having at last caught up late with last month Tune/theme of the month, here's my take on The Hole in the Wall:

Here's my stab at this tune. Nothing particularly clever done with it arrangement-wise, but it has taken me a bit of time to learn it. Now I've got it, it doesn't seem anything like as hard as it did when I was learning it, if that makes sense.

Played in Eb on the Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb.

A question from a dyed in the wool cross rower. The opening phrase of this piece has four notes on the same button - push-pull, push-pull. I notice elsewhere on this forum that someone was recently advised not to hold down the button and let the bellows do the work, but to re-finger the note.
Is this true here? If so, do  you use the same finger or alternate fingers (rapid piano note style)? I know there's more than one way...

I think I just hold the button down, but there's a case to be made for lifting the finger it between the 3rd and 4th note for musical phrasing.

Opinion is always going to be divided here!  I know that, for example, Ed Rennie advises that each note should be seperately fingered - and that's what gives his playing such a beautifully crisp style.  Others, presumably wanting a less staccato sound will hold the button and reverse the bellows - though this requires good bellows control to avoid strange gurglings as the first note cuts and the new note attacks (not that Ed falls short in any way on bellows control!).  Like most things in melodeon playing, try both and see what suits you.  It may well be that you'll like both options and vary them as you play through the piece.

Has anyone spotted that the A section is the chord sequence for Pachebel's canon? Oasis did when they ripped it off for Don't Look Back In Anger. They also used Imagine for the Intro - so I wonder(wall) if that would work for Hole in the Wall.

Saltarelle D/G has a D# accidental on the pull and the B chord on the push!

Yes, that's why I like to have that accidental the other way round.

The USB connector on my video camera has broken so I did a video of this using the built in camera on my computer.
The audio is fine but the video is not - sorry about that. Hopefully next time I'll get it sorted.

The attached PDF shows the chords.  I'm playing with the thirds out and LM on the right hand.
