Theme of the Month for April 2016: Polkas
« on: April 01, 2016, 01:07:01 AM »

Simple theme folks; polkas. Any type of polka, English, Scottish, Irish, French, whatever - doesn't matter. Simple as that!

Have fun!

I love to play polkas! Here are four!  ;D

Dear God, thank you for helping me get and play the melodeon and harmonica. I am extremely grateful for these gifts! Amen.

Return of Spring & Woodland Revels

https://youtu.be/tHoFnc9eAuM

Return of Spring is recently learnt while preparing for a concertina workshop, and then from hearing  'Shipshape' play it. I had long been seeking a suitable partner for Woodland Revels and this was 'it'. Woodland Revels was (very) a steep learning curve in the 1980's, inspired by the playing of Dan Quinn, with a couple of tips from Nigel Chippindale at a workshop at Felixstowe Folk Weekend.

A bit rough and ready and probably a bit speedy but hopefully a bit of seasonal fun. Think Squirrels!

All the best

Return of Spring

Obscure fact of the day (unless you're Sage Herb... (:))....Pete Coe, Johnny Adams, Chris Coe and A N other had a band called Hooke's Law because their favourite tune at the time was Return of the Spring. As a humble teacher of English, I needed this explaining to me.... :|bl

I didn't know that - but I like it! Just the kind of arcane, twisted reasoning that appeals to me!

I thought this might amuse Johnny Adams so I sent him a link and he replied. (Quoted with permission)

Haha!  The other band member was Mike Hockenhull, husband to Helen Hockenhull of Gracenotes and formerly Helen Watson of Mucck oops... Muckram Wakes. It was he who came up with the name Hooke's Law if I remember rightly. I have the master tapes of a CD we made but never issued - hoping to get it out this year.

Super opportunity to post this, which I was quite likely to be doing anyway.

https://youtu.be/3bdNfXk6LBw

The Puddleduck Polka by Greg Trice, who I knew in the mid 1970s when he played PA for Chelmsford Morris and as part of the band Lumps of Plum Pudding.
Not all of Greg's tunes are melodeon frieldly, and some are challenging on any instrument, but this one's quite approachable. Many of them (including this one) are in a new book "The Endeavour: Greg Trice Tune Book" available from Hedingham Fair for £8.50.

There's a CD of Greg's tunes too, which I've mentioned before, available from Sarah Graves' web site
(ETA- CD also available from the Hedingham Fair link, which I've now updated; thanks to Peter Dunk for finding the right adddress)

Hidden away! Book and CD for £15.00 + £3.95 p&p

Excellent tune and playing btw, although I'd hardly describe it as approachable!

"La vielha" (the old lady, in provençal language)

http://pousser-tirer.blogspot.fr/2015/12/blog-post.html

A traditionnal tune from Provence. I mostly played it on the tin wistle for carnavals in Marseille and Arles, but it's nice on melodeon too (i can't take my box in carnavals because here the tradition is to throw flour, and sometimes eggs, on people...). In Provence, there is a lot of Carnaval songs and tune with "Old lady" in the name because it's the nickname of the winter, and at carnaval we celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of spring.

Thanks for this, nicely played.
I really should try one to get the push pull thing going, but polkas have always been a tumbleweed moment for me. That was also true, though, of the whole melodeon experience - so maybe I've got an epiphany coming.

Y'see Baz, that's the root trouble - teacher of 'English'
If you were  a teacher of *Science* and Physics in particular, then you'd  be quoting Hooke's Law constantly.

QUOTE
" Hooke's law is a principle of physics that states that the force needed to extend or compress a spring by some distance is proportional to that distance. That is: where is a constant factor characteristic of the spring, its stiffness. The law is named after 17th century British physicist Robert Hooke.........."

Apply that to their favourite tune title - Return of the Spring!

The other question is '' which of the aforementioned folkies taught Physics"!!!

Just catching up:
Anahata, the Puddleduck Polka is superb!
It fits into my idea of a 'bonkers tune' that always appeals to me.........
thanks for that!
cheers

This I knew...I played in a band with Paul Havell remember who explained it to me at length...as to Physics teacher I'd guess Johnny.... (:)
