Theme of the Month for May 2016: Marches, Reels, etc
« on: May 01, 2016, 02:00:34 PM »

I don't know about you, but I've got quite a few tunes I'd like to do which I'm not sure if they're polkas, reels, schottisches, marches, rants, etc... so it's kind of hard to do a theme for them. Now is their month! A month for tunes where you're not really sure what kind of 2/4 or 4/4 thingy they are. Do another polka if you like; doesn't really matter. Any old 2/4 or 4/4 tune will do quite nicely.

Cheers,

Clive

The Golden Keyboard

(picked up as the middle tune played by Ben Paley and Tab Hunter here  https://youtu.be/ogeN_erG3jY )

which I presently pair with The Glass Island Reel, an earlier  'theme' upload

Dear God, thank you for helping me get and play the melodeon and harmonica. I am extremely grateful for these gifts! Amen.

In today's video I play Sternpolka, a German Volksmusik polka, on my Accordiola Mundinger Diaton III Grand Luxe club accordion. :D

Enjoy! :D

Here is what I made, hopefully it won't render that bad  :||: :

https://youtu.be/vLHvVy9Y1uY

I got the tune from a Tony McManus album, it is registred as a hornpipe at thesession.org but somehow I've always found that it had a schottische feeling to it (as a matter of fact we did play it as such in a former folk ball band).

Cheers!

This tune has been swiped off the latest Leveret album and has been in my head for the past couple of weeks - it just won't shift.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bS5dmXykFks

To those of you brave enough to have listened to it, it's in your head too now, isn't it? And it's going to stay there for days, probably weeks. You're welcome - enjoy :-)

Played on the Preciosa in Bb/Eb

I've had a quick trawl and not found the dots - could you save me some time? Doesn't matter what key.
Fortunately I've a very bad memory, so I don't suffer from ear worms.

Must say it sounds better than it looks it has a right to. Must be the perky rhythms you've added. Thanks for the link.

Lester has inspired me to get a recording done of my version of The Old Grenadier.
Heavily influenced by Brass Monkey,  it is just a brilliant tune.

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Another bash at this month's theme from me here....

https://soundcloud.com/thrupenny-bit/over-the-field-of-turnipswma

It's 'Over the Field of Turnips' as recorded by Mark Bazeley and Rob Murch on the 'Banquet of Boxes' cd.
I started to learn it as it is a great tune, then following a comment on Melnet, I realised it was the marching tune of the Devonshire Regiment, the 'Devonshire terriers'.
It means my granddad and uncles, some of whom I never met, listened to this as they marched to the Great War. That musical connection and thought sends shivers down my spine, and I find it amazing to have discovered this connection all these years later.

I don't usually submit more than one but this seems to fit and was also on the 'to do' list.

Here it is...

http://abcnotation.com/tunePage?a=trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/book/Playford/GloryOfTheSun_PLFD1657_142/0000

A playford tune.

Just checking - are the dots correct in showing c# in this ? My ears and fingers are drawn to c nat. Wondering what to pair this with - other than Road to Poynton (great circular tune that it is !) to avoid being too derivative. And yes - it is certainly an earworm !

In Jeremy Barlow's The Complete Country Dance Tunes from Playford's Dancing Master the tune has the tune in D but there is a natural sign in brackets for the Cs . I hear the C as natural.

Do strathspeys count?   I've played this for years (having learned it from Rod Stradling), and only found out it was a strathspey when looking for its author...The Sweetness of Mary https://youtu.be/2NEjp6FZ9AE.

Once Youtube had uploaded, it offered me versions by Anahata and Martin Ellison of this parish...what a broad church Melnet is...
