Here's a tune from Playford volume 2. It's also in John of the Green the Cheshire way. Could have put it in the Christmas theme I suppose but that's a long way off.

And now for something completely different: a csardas from Central Slovakia (two of them, actually).

As per Wikipedia, csardas is a traditional Hungarian folk dance that has been exported to several neighbouring countries (including Slovakia and the easternmost part of the Czech Republic). It is in 2/4 or 4/4 time and is "characterised by a variation in tempo", starting slowly and ending very fast (on my take this translates into "as fast as I can manage").

Here is the link: https://youtu.be/GnacnIkrX-Y

Just curious: how long was your beard when you started learning it? Very nice (playing, but beard too).

For the "Something in Four" theme, here's a tune I've been playing for years, but don't know its title or the type of tune. It sounds Breton, but I really don't know.  Enjoy.

Thanks

Here's a couple of new tunes I've been playing which are very definitely hornpipes, but they're in 4/4 so I'm gonna post them in here ;D

https://soundcloud.com/robotmay/william-winters-jaunty-hornpipes

They are the fastest method I've found of turning my arms into dead weights when played on my Erika.

Nicely played. Don't know the first one, but the second is Miss Menager's Hornpipe, which I know from William Clarke's manuscript

Dear God, thank you for helping me get and play the melodeon and harmonica. I am extremely grateful for these gifts! Amen.

In today's video I play the Julida Polka on my Accordiola Mundinger Diaton III Grand Luxe club accordion. :D

Enjoy! :D

Clarke calls it Miss Merager's, and it's also in Leadley (Fiddler of Helperby) as Miss Menager's.
I didn't notice it in my copy of Winters before.

I decided to try playing through all of the hornpipes in there in the hopes of finding some good new tunes ;D
There's a bunch of other nice ones too. WW seems to have been terrible at remembering the names of tunes (an uncommon trait in folk musicians, ahem), and I keep stumbling across funky versions of well-known ditties. Quite a few Robert Burns songs in tune form hidden in there.

Still haven't found a name for the first tune, seems to be a bit of an odd'un.

Well played.

Polkas always remind me of Black and White thriller movies, where innocent couples are out for an evening stroll through the funfair - but tragedy is just lurking in the shadows....

It's the juxtaposition of jolly with unhinged - a bit like an empty-but-still-swinging playground swing... oddly disconcerting.

Am I the only one?
Sorry - Happy Wanderer, nothing about your excellent playing and warm attitude.

Thank you all - onto a new theme (an hour early!); as usual, please stick any late entries, or not-late entries submitted in the next hour, on to the end of this thread - no need to stop now.

Cheers,
Clive

That's fantastic Mitch. I have a recording of Willy Taylor playing it on fiddle but not tried it on melodeon. I will now!
