Julia Gates' Waltz
« on: May 04, 2016, 10:35:49 PM »

Hello.

I've just found this lovely waltz on YouTube. It may be a tune that's well known to many here, but I don't know it yet.

Have a look/listen-

Would anyone have the dots for this tune or know where I might be able to find them?

Hi there, I know this as julia's waltz by tony hall, the version he has on his cd is amazing, almost like he plays 2 melodeons at once, I have the sheets, but ive been scratching some variations on it, but mostly it looks fine. Pm me your email and I will send it to you!

Ps
Its written out for a C/F but it has the notes as well

Tony Hall's recording is well known but the tune was composed by Pete Shaw.

You'll find the definitive version (from the composer) here: http://www.peteshaw.co.uk/images/8_BourneWaltzes.pdf

The rest of Pete's site is well worth a look too, many more good tunes to download.
We know him well: he calls for our band occasionally.

The Story of Julia Gates herself is interesting, too.

Thank you for the above replies.

What an amazing story attached to such a lovely waltz.

There are a few waltzes in the Bourne Collection I didn't know so that's good too. Also a load more tunes to look through the next time I have a minute....

Thanks again.

I found Derek the nutters rendition on YouTube particularly useful when I was learning this tune   (:)

As it slowly is becoming a hobby of mine, I will revive another old thread again.
This is a lovely tune and I could not resist to record it at least once.
Hope you'll enjoy it and please give me feedback if you have any!  :||:

EDIT: Wait a second, I uploaded the wrong file :D

Edit 2: https://soundcloud.com/laubblaeser/julia-gates-waltz-take-2
This should be the right file now!

Jack's version is well worth a listen
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WzuZSgrQhw

what fabulous playing!  ;D

Pete Shaw composed this beautiful (and tricky!) tune for a remarkable blind/deaf girl called Julia Gates  (now a lady of course, it was years ago). Tony Hall recorded it, but Pete composed it.

She sometimes went dancing to one of the bands he was in then (as did we, it was the Dennis Cuddles Starlight band, who were great fun!).

It is my favourite waltz ever, and Jack plays my favourite version ever.
