Johnny B Connolly
« on: May 04, 2016, 11:14:32 PM »

Also  known as Johnny OG.

I am confused about the box system he plays.

AT one time he was a C#/D player, at least when he first arrived in Portland, Oregon from Ireland.
Apparently  his first couple of CDs were C#/D , now I am being told his last CDs were  B/C and he is currently playing B/C.

Anyone know?

This is a video a year ago playing a Manfrini in Ireland.

in that vid, his bellow work is different to the other two. go to very end of tune, last note (E) for example where he's on the draw.
other thing is, i guess he can play B/C as well when required, which will suit certain music and certain company?

"B" stands for "Box."  Always been a B/C player far as I know.  Every beginner who takes lessons from him winds up playing that system.  Has a Briggs these days.  Also plays the melodeon, which is seemingly de rigueur any more.  Why aren't there fiddlers playing 2 stringed instruments, hmm?

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

If he can play more than one system I don't see why it would be absurd for him to teach something other than B/C...

I was at a workshop with Johnny Og last October.  All the students there were playing B/C and Johnny was playing the Paddy Clancy B/C box formerly owned by Derek Hickey, as used by Derek on his OAIM videos.  That would make sense if his Manfrini was C#/D.

Yep. There was a comment stating that previously but it seems to have changed.

Yea Johnny B and Johnny Óg are two different box players. Johnny Óg is melodeon player Johnny Connollys son. If I remember right, Johnny Óg is equally comfortable playing both BC and C#D systems.
