G/C Liliput or Preciosa
« on: May 24, 2016, 01:17:48 PM »

Oh collective wisdom of melnet....

A friend of mine has a G/C Preciosa, I don't know of any others and I'd be interested to know if this a conversion or if either the Preciosa or the Liliput were ever made in these keys originally. I am only aware of them being available in Bb/Eb or the more common C/F.

So Melnutters - were these joyful little boxes manufactured in G/C?

I'm pretty sure they were only ever made in C/F and Bb/Eb ... although there's probably an exception to surface and bite me.

I know that microbot has done a conversion of a Lilliput and it sounded absolutely glorious

... and now I want one even more  (:)

It would complete the set with liliputs in D/G and Bb/Eb and a C/F Preciosa.

Well I have the C/F Liliput, and was sorely tempted by the D/G that Theo had for sale. One day, I'll get there

Hi Helena,

I've done 3 Liliputs in G/C - they work really well with a delicious, full sound. The one for Miklos is on the Soundcloud site, one is in Canada (With Bonita who also has the A/D red Liliput on S.Cloud) and the third G/C Liliput is my wife - Ellie's.

We will be at Gower, Whitby, Bromyard and Sidmouth Festivals and the G/C Liliput always comes along for the trip. You'd be welcome to have a go anytime.

The conversion is pretty straightforward, but it's easier to start from a Bb/Eb instrument... although I then import a C-row set of reeds from a C/F box. (The remaining reed-sets from the two instruments (F-set and Eb set) are the perfect starting points for either a D/G Liliput or a C#/D Liliput). I usually get asked for standard G/C accidentals of Bb/G# and C#/Eb, in two octaves...

I've not been asked for a G/C Preciosa .. but Cohen Braithwaite-Kilkoyne of 'Granny's Attic' asked me to do an A/D Preciosa, which turned out very well... it's so powerful it got nicknamed 'The Rocket'.

cheers!

My new Preciosa arrived today, and it's in C/F, pity, as I already have a C/F Liliput, but I will look into what can be made of it. I have also bought another Liliput from the same guy, who is diposing of a few melodeons that belonged to a relative, and knows nothing about them.. Again I don't know what keys it is in, but as I got it cheaply, I will take my chance.
Do all Preciosas have the button underneath to lock the bellows?  At least I think that's what it's for, although it doesn't work, it sort of half catches.

Yes, and it often needs a bit of adjustment to work properly.

CF is by far the most common tuning for Hohner Club boxes including Liliput and Preciosa, so unless the seller says BbEb the likelihood is it will be CF.

Apart from the brown Preciosa with Darth Vader grill that you converted to DG for Julian S , and which is now mine :-) it has normal bellows straps, with no sign of it ever having an internal lock .

Still squeezing after all these years.
Mostly on hohners , with a couple of Dinos and a smattering of anglos - and now a Jeffries duet

Ah yes thanks for the reminder, I'd forgotten about that model.   It usually has silvery braided metal bellows straps.
