Origin of melodeon in English traditional music

Following a discussion in the pub tonight I wondered when the melodeon came into use for English traditional music, and when, in particular, the D/G melodeon became popular.

I hadn't noticed the D/G melodeon had become very popular.
Or maybe its just my playing of it that's the problem  ::)
