Le Revenant/ Malaimable, Origins/Original recordings?
« on: May 27, 2016, 09:58:07 PM »

Does anyone know where the tune "Le Revenant" originates/who authored it?  I have seen it attributed to Georges Brassens, but as the captain of his American Fan Club, I do not believe this to be true.  Would love to know more about it, and perhaps hear the original version as there are many on youtube.

While I am at it, anyone know of a link to the original recording of La Mal Aimable or "Le Petit Dejeuner" as I believe it was first called?  I have been unable to find it, and having more or less gotten the song down this week, would love to hear how it is supposed to sound.

"Le revenant"
might be created by Serge desaunay et Hal Collomb. Hal Collomb played in a trad group in the 70s with Desaunay brothers .. I am not sure but it could be the origin.

Le revenant is listed as "trad français" in the copy I have

Malaimable ... don't know about an original recording, but here is a pretty good one that I found useful to learn it   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWXv2zJ_HuE

I've also seen Le Revenant attributed to the traditions of Brittany  (http://www.vitrifolk.be/partitions-2/partitions-france-REVENANT%20---%20Le_revenant.png) and Anjou (http://www.branche-rouge.org/chansons/chansons-medievales-et-traditionnelles-francaises/le-revenant), so I guess its origins are uncertain. You can see why it's become a standard for French diatonists, though. Beautiful and haunting.

Grape Ape :

There are several lyrics for this song. Both are about the ghost ("revenant" in french) of a french soldier coming back to his home and meeting his mother.
The Anjou one explains the mother has received a letter telling her his son was dead in the war. Then he came back (he was not dead) and his mother thought she was looking at a ghost. It is an an all's well thad ends well end ..

It was kind of a "universal" theme in 19th century tunes, young men had to be soldiers for 7 years at this time (Napoleon's wars you know ...  ;).
No wonder if it was sung in several parts of France, and it also expresses the secret hope of every french mother in this time : their sons are not dead and they come back ..

I've always liked this rendition of La Mal Aimable. She also plays Le Revenant

Yes she plays quite nicely.  The version of Malaimable I play is the same (though I don't look nearly as good playing it), her variations on Le Revenant still elude me though...
