Just returned home from Belgium and the two and half row course. We didn't do so much sanding on these ones. They had a fantastic workshop with lots of sanding machines, drills, fret saw, and all sorts of saws  (for cutting fingers etc.)  See the photos on the other link.

Failed my GCE woodwork. I'm just not a tool kind of guy. Maybe if I start practising now I'll be ready for the 2015 course. In the meantime:

I got most of my stuff from Axminster Tools, who really do hang out on a trading estate in Axminster. I couldn't find any mention of synthetic wire wool either. Also all the little tool shops that used to be about seem to have disappeared.

I don't know where I'd be without Axminster, they're bloody brilliant.

They also have silicon carbide paper in grits for woodwork rather than finishing.

http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Hermes-Perdurable-Silicon-Carbide-Sheets-19876.htm

So much nicer to use and lasts way longer than conventional aluminium oxide paper, I go through literally hundreds of sheets a year.

Homebase have got 3M synthetic steel wool, 3M Synthetic Steel Wool - Fine. I'm sure I couldn't find it when I looked before.  ???

...also sold in a guitar shop I once worked in cut up into small squares for cleaning fretboards, delivering a tidy profit. It's amazing what people will buy and for how much, even when told where it came from, as long as you market it properly...

That's the problem, we've got packets of the green stuff under the sink, but until you get some (synthetic wire wool) in yer 'and, you've no clue as to what it really is, the tiny pictures on the net are no use.

Is anyone else likely to be in the area on the Friday evening before the start? There was a mention of a possible get-together in one of Katie's previous missives, but not in the latest one.

I am envious of you all about to go on the next course. Yes - I know I went on the last one, and have the lovely Golden Box to show for it.

But I am greedy to relive the experience again. I had a brilliant time on the course. It was exhausting, mentally and physically, as there was SO much to cram in to such a short time. But the sense of detachment from everything else going on in the world outside was truly amazing; nothing else mattered other than to coax the raw timber and other components and see them gradually transform as a result of one's own efforts into a beautiful and unique instrument. There is also the comradeship of your fellow workers. There will be times when you need to work closely together with your neighbour - sometimes you absolutely need four hands to do some jobs. We developed into a very close-knit group and there was a real sense of loss after we'd all dispersed at the end of the week.

High point for me last time: At the end of the last afternoon, watching Katie and Carl waltzing together to my playing on my box wot I'd made.

Low point: Arriving back from a lunch break to find that part of my keyboard assembly had warped in the warmth of the sunshine coming through the window, and having to start that bit again. Put me back nearly a whole day. Be warned!

Quote of the week:
Emmanual Pariselle (in response to me being rather over-generous in the application of PVA woodworking adhesive): "Does your father own ze glue factory?"

Have a great time all of you. I shall expect to see some new Golden Boxes at Witney.
