Day One in the Melodeon Maker's House
« Reply #40 on: April 10, 2010, 06:42:39 PM »

Today we have mostly sanded, along with some sanding and a little extra sanding.  :'(

Team met up at 9 and after H&S chat we were set to select our pieces of cherry to make the frames from. Them marking out, technical sawing by Emmanual and glueing. The secret to good glueing is in the how much, not enough is not good, too much is not good, a very fine line which I have yet to detect divides these two states. So erring on the side of too much is just hard work getting rid of it and too little leading to air leaks I plumped for too much.

Believe Theo will be putting up some pictures maybe even video to show the boys and girl hard at it sanding.

Tomorrow promises more sanding  :(

That is the best side to plump for IMHO, despite Emmanuel's sarcastic comments about fathers and glue factories.
A few weeks after my box was finished, and I was working at home on the final tuning, I was dismayed by a quiet but insistent buzzing noise coming from one of the notes. After lengthy and frustrating checking, I finally tracked it down to an air leak at the base of one of the reed chamber walls, where insufficient glue had been applied, and which was causing the neighbouring reed to sound. A quick splodge of PVA glue round the inside of the reed chamber cured it. But it was very annoying at the time.

The counter story is also connected with the reed chambers. Again, during fine-tuning a few weeks later I found that a couple of the leather valves were catching on hardened beads of glue at the corners of the reed chamber and so not opening properly (and affecting the pitch of the reed as a result). Judicious filing of the reed chamber corner sorted that one out, but again it took a while to determine the cause of the problem.

So - glue application is indeed critical!

Last year Chas wrote a shanty for us to sing whilst so engaged. Altogether now:
We're sanding on the box, me boys, sanding on the box....
Unfortunately I can't remember the rest of it. Perhaps it is just as well......

Just to make anyone who has done this course semi-jealous we not only have Emmanuel Pariselle instructing on the course but he has bought Marc Serafini to assist him.

So arguably the two best "accordion diatonique" manufactures in France backed by our very own Theo and Rees, to coin a phrase,
Melodeon Making does not get better than this!

Some pictures, if you are interested!

Very interesting - I was expecting more groaning about sanding, not envy-inducing pictures of half made boxes!

Yes. Lester. Reminds me of October 2008. We had a great time. I'm sure you are too. Regards to Emmanuel from Mr Chas.

As was mentioned earlier this came to light.

Squeezebox Making Shanty

We're Sanding Down The Wood, Me Boys!
We're Sanding Down The Wood!
The Front, The Back, The Sides, The Top!
We're Sanding Down The Wood!

The Weekend Wasn't Wasted
We Made A Box Of Cherry Wood
The Next Two Days Were Wasted Though
We Rubbed It Bloody Good

Chorus - We're Sanding Down The Wood, Me Boys!

Tuesday Night When We Went Home
All Feeling Rather Nackered
The Boxes They Were Looking Good
'Cos Now They've All Been Laquered

Chorus - We're Sanding Down The Wood, Me Boys!

Sawdust To The Ceiling
By Thursday You'll Be Moaning
'Cos There's Over 90 Reeds
And They All Need Bloody Tuning

Chorus - We're Sanding Down The Wood, Me Boys!

To The Toilet With Gluey Fingers
And Now I'm Feeling Foolish
I've Glued My Foreskin All Way Back
And It's Looking Rather Jewish

Chorus - We're Sanding Down The Wood, Me Boys!

Cheers lads  :|glug

More sanding. more construction. But handed a parcel full of Binci Tipo-a-mano reeds - now there is a thing of beauty and a joy for ever!

Additional pictures for the terminally bored.

Wow, I can't believe I only read this post now, that looks amazing! Maybe I'll be able to afford it after I get my Gaillard. Out of interest how much is it? PM if you'd rather not say publicly.

Luke.

Great stuff, Lester. Keep the reports and pictures coming!
I see from your photos that you are in the Abbott's Hall again - in fact in the same room as we were in for the previous years. I thought this time you were going to the Stowmarket Community centre. Did that arrangement fall through?

Just don't drop all the reeds on the floor - Ask Chas

The hall was due to be refurbed to become a museum thus making it un available for the course but that was delayed so we are in the still. Just had a fabulous night at Katie Howsen's having Confit du Canard and tunes with Marc and Emmanual, fabulous rtunes on incredible instruments.

If needs be you could probably recoup the cost if willing to part with the box (v-unlikely in my estimation)

Oh dear, count me as terminally bored, because it's fascinating seeing the progression from bits of wood to boxes!  ;D

Ah I remember it well. Sanding. Reeds on the floor. Canard A La Emmanuell. Pizza. Only reason for the Pizza was to have somewhere to put the stops for laquering.
The IKEA team were the first to finish.
Enjoy.  :|glug

At last melodeon shaped objects are appearing from the kit of parts and glue

http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lester.bailey/10_04_11MelodeonMakers?authkey=Gv1sRgCNuhzLqW2Zv6kQE&feat=directlink

Please some sympathy for my injury, although the Sainted Mrs bailey is greatly surprised that it took 4 days of using tools to make me bleed as it normally takes 4 minutes

Played one of Marc Seraphini's melodeons today, I really believe I am in love.  :|bl I will write more in a more appropriate thread, but for a bit less than Castagnari-ish prices and a long wait  you could buy a melodeon that is hand made and just so so beautiful to play, listen too and look at (he is indeed smitten).

Promised a long long day tomorrow as we have to have boxes with reeds fitted soon or the melodeon tuning fairies (Theo and Rees) will have many sleepless hours.
