There's more photos on my facebook page, which any FB member should be able to access, and also some on the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust website - www.eatmt.org.uk and follow the links. Also have a look at Marc Serafini's website - www.la-baf.com which will absolutely AMAZE you. He's the most innovative melodeon-maker around, as well as a stunning musician (and good cook!)

Finally melodeons are emerging! Two semi complete boxes are off to amusr Rees and Theo and the rest are not far behind. Mind you it has been a 12 hour day today and Emmanuel and Marc are looking (or just are) really knackered. Finally did the really scary bit of glueing together the treble reed pans and shutters, there has to be enough glue to make it air tight but no so much that the shutters don't slide - a difference of very little   ???. Still spirits are high bounced along by Katies' catering and tunes and the ability to play Marc's melodeons in spare minutes. Have Karie or I told you quite how stunning his boxes are  :||:  (now someone is coming up to retirement and could do with a treat  ;D )

As ever more pictures:

More great stuff Lester (also Katie too, thanks - shame I can't access your facebook photos!)

Very interested to see a new departure from previous years: the higher reed chambers have a central divider along part of the length. What's the idea of that please? I'm guessing it is to partly restrict the airflow to the smaller reeds so that they do not 'choke off' under higher bellows pressure. We achieved this by adding small wooden wedges to the base of the reed chambers.

Carry on chaps!

Your assumption is 100% correct. They are a Marc Serafini  inovation and seem to work really well.

Today I gave birth to a fabulous 1 row 4 stop melodeon with a little (well a lot) help from some chums and Ress as tuning midwife. Pictures as link below, video at the weekend.   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Lester, that's gorgeous! Shame that our paths are unlikely to cross today, cos I'd love a whirl on that.

Well, at least I have your excellent photographs to console me (perhaps).

Super instrument, looks like a good and productive time all round. Even with the bloodletting.

Sorry Steve, can't work out how to make the album accessible to non FB people, although I know it can be done. Most of them are on the website, but I'm totally knackered now and can't raise the energy to put the last few on, cos it's a relatively lengthy process. Brilliant week, lovely boxes. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Final pictures now on my Picasaweb:

Fabulous week - Manu and Marc are inspirational makers/players/Frenchmen/non-parsnip believers (you had to be there!), Theo and Rees the Tuning Fairies always there with help/advice and seemingly happy to give away all their trade secrets - Katie all round good egg/organiser/supplier of tea/coffee and chilli. All the participants pulled together to get everyone to a successful conclusion.

If you have the time/inclination and the money it will be one of the most unforgettable weeks of your life!

There was a conversation with Katie about this, She's the one who has the contact info. Quite a few on the latest course weren't aware of Melnet.

The buttons disappearing into the keyboard a la Hohner on my new baby annoyed me, so I have put some bits of wood behind the levers, similar to Theo's Hohner mod.

You need four bits of wood, approx 5.5 mm thick, two approx 62 mm long, and two approx 34 mm long. 5.5 mm makes the buttons go down about flush with the keyboard cover. The width doesn't matter, as long as it's wide enough to go under the buttons, and not too wide to fit in. The pieces I used are 12 mm wide. I used hardwood, because that is what I had, which makes it a bit clackety, fine by me. You could use softwood, or use wood a few mm thinner with some felt or leather stuck to it. If you won't ever want to take it out, you can glue it in with PVA. I tacked mine in with tiny dabs of Bostik.

Imperial conversion for Lester: 7/16" thick, 2+7/16" and 1+13/16" long.

I also limited the button travel on my Golden Box a few months ago. But I did it by adding a felt buffer underneath the lever arms. The keyboard construction makes this very easy to do. A friend who is a piano tuner and technician gave me some piano felt that was about 1/4 inch thick and it was just right for the job. I cut some pieces to size and glued them lightly in place with a smear of PVA glue, which would be easy enough to remove should I ever need to do it in the future (why, though?).

With the felt buffer in place, the button travel is to just slightly above the top of the keyboard top plate, which is ideal.

It would be interesting to know in what keys the boxes were tuned.Who chose what and why.
