Numbers are quiet at the moment, and will probably get quieter over the summer holiday, so it strikes me as sensible to go easy on the theme over summer. So this theme lasts 2 months, and possibly 3; play any new tune you've picked up over the summer. Some of you will go to festival workshops, or pick up tunes at sessions at Sidmouth, etc, or indeed learn a tune from anywhere; let's hear what you've learned - practice it up (just a little) and post your efforts; rough and ready is fine. Feel free to contribute any tune as you learn it; as many as you can or like.

Cheers,

Clive

Heh, Many of my contributions to ToTM have been tunes I've just learned!

It's good we've got two months ... If I do post a TotM it's always right at the end, because it takes me a month to get up to speed!

Here's mine: Sunshine by Gregory Jolivet.
https://youtu.be/QFO0E8-aLlE

I think it's a first for me because I've never seen any sheet music for it, and I rely on print until I've actively memorised something.  But Guru Mel insisted and so here we are.  Still a bunch of recurring errors to eliminate, and more feeling will come with time.

I am currently learning Bagpipers: https://youtu.be/Vbp8z0omqFM

I'm not sure where to take it from here though.  Any ideas for tunes I could pair it with?

Dear God, thank you for helping me get and play the melodeon and harmonica. I am extremely grateful for these gifts! Amen.

I didn't learn this tune recently, but I did recently learn to record this tune without making mistakes.  :P

In today's video I play Korobeiniki (Коробейники) which is also known as the Tetris Song. It is a Russian folk tune. I play it on my Accordiola Mundinger Diaton III Grand Luxe club accordion. :D

Enjoy! :D

Sounds good to me - it's a strong tune so could sit quite happily on its own. My advice, have a really big glass of port and play it round for 10-15 mins and see where it goes. I find a useful starting point for improvisation/feeling is to miss notes out, rather than put extra stuff in - leave a few deliberate gaps and then let them automatically fill themselves a couple of times through the tune later.

Here's one I learned not much earlier! La Discrete by Stephane Delicq - who I have become a complete fan of, at least partly thanks to Arty's enthusiasm and Playandteach kindly providing the dots.

I've been playing this about three weeks and this is the first time I've got all the way through without a major hitch so I'm feeling chuffed!

Gonna cheat here a little, as this is on my concertina rather than the box (I'll do some proper ones later). This is, however, a tune I learnt this week.
The melodeon relation here is that I originally heard it being played by Emmanuel and Myriam at Witney a couple of years ago, and never got around to learning it on the box. As it's an Irish tune, I believe, this is my rather Anglicised version of a French rendition of an Irish tune ;D

I find the phrasing much more tricky on the melodeon as it moves between G and Em all the time. Pretty tune; anyone know more about it?

This is what the session says about it. However the tune is an old one. I have a setting of it in "Carolan The Life Times and Music of an Irish Harper" (Donal O'Sullivan), who set a planxty to it (which I think is Molly McAlpin, however, he credits the tune to Thomas Connellan. It certainly  has the sound of an early tune (probably 17C)

Ooh thanks Greg. I must admit that a lot of Irish music passes me by as I'm not into the Irish trad scene much, but occasionally I stumble across a really nice tune. They typically seem to be the older ones too, perhaps because they made their way abroad a while back and are played a little slower elsewhere ;D

Nice sound. Does this mean fewer tunes on the melodeon?.... :o

Well done. Glad to see the Delicq fan club spreading. It is utterly charming. I had to relearn it twice when I switched to Dutch reversals in both octaves, one at a time. Also good to see how you cope with the G sharps - in light of your Hascy box.

I really like the way you've done it.
I love this tune. I used to play it, rather slowly, on the Irish bouzouki (before the dog jumped on it). Must learn it again on the Melodeon. . Legend has it  was known as O'Carolan's dream, because he said  it was the tune he most wished he had written. His tunes are rarely easy to play but well worth the effort.

Actually it's often tunes that are a bastard on the melodeon that turn out to be nice on the Maccann, so it balances out nicely. Except for the Savage Hornpipe, which sucks on every instrument.

Thanks! It's one of my favourite tunes of the past two years. Emmanuel and Myriam's version of it was fantastic and really endeared the tune to me; I find it really evocative, and I rarely feel that with tunes ;D
It seems to suit the warm tone of the concertina really well too. Might try it on my G/C melodeon to see what it's like on there.

I really need to buy a book of O'Carolan and just have a bash through the tunes to see what I like!
