Hambopolska efter BryggarViktor

this suits the theme quite well as I've been learning throughout July and ran out of time. Someone posted a link to the Chicken Polka by Jan Anders Andersson, and I've been watching other tunes on his channel, and took a fancy to this one. I made the mistake of watching his wonderfully bouncy version again just after recording this. I seem to have “folk-processed” it somewhat.  :-[

Nicely done. Cat didn't seem impressed though.

They never do.... Seriously that was quite fun- well needed after a grueling day selling wine.....

PS Arty- that was fantastic!!! Your playing truly sets a standard- and do not reply with the usual modest statements! Your playing does not warrant it!

Thank you for your nice comment!
Actually, it's not modesty - I really push myself, set targets, criticise my playing and try to get better. Maybe because I don't have a teacher, I don't know - it's just the way I am.
But I really appreciate all comments, good or bad. Criticism can save me a lot of time going up the wrong path and nice comments like yours help me to relax and feel encouraged.
It' a kind of madness!!!

ABC and dots here.

There is a link about the Breton Wedding March on the sessions page that did not resolve:

Siege Of Guingamp - The Story behind
Piper John Murphy has done some research on the background of this song (!) published in An Piobaire September 2013 - Great story!

I dug around till I found it: http://162.13.136.126/data/PIOBAIRE/PIOB0904.PDF The article is on page 12

How interesting Syale, thank you for that.

I lived in Brittany for nearly 5 years and most of my neighbours, (they were farmers), spoke Breton as a second language. I distinctly remember a couple of them telling me that they could understand quite a bit of the Welsh language. So maybe the story is not so far fetched after all!

It works the other way too. In the 1980s I used to work closely with the ventilation engineer at Cynheidre colliery (near Llanelli). He was a first-language Welsh speaker and sometimes went to Brittany for sea angling holidays. He found that he could understand a lot of the Breton language.

I've been working on "In The Toyshop" for a few months (with the usual excellent guidance from MelonBox) and I think it's nearly there.  It's used in one of the C&E dances and this version has less accidentals than the written version, but that's how the band play it - and that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! Ooh that's a fun tune, nice work ;D

Here's my nemesis tune for the past few months: https://soundcloud.com/robotmay/3-little-owls
It's a Toon Van Mierlo tune, and it has proved a complete nightmare to get a clean recording of it. On the up-side, I really like the sound of Bb on that box; it's pitched just right. Sound quality might be a bit hit and miss, as I had to use a high-pass filter to cut out some very irritating percussive noises caused by my experimenting with close-miking/positioning.

Oh, that's nicely done. You've got what I would call the Naragonia sound in there too - I guess the key you're playing that in must imply a fingering that gives a certain feel. I doubt it would sound as nice in a home key... definitely worth the effort.

Thanks Clive! Yeah playing in that key definitely helps lend it that feel, though I think Toon plays this on his C/F box so he can do some stuff I couldn't manage (aside from also being better); there's a few really nice burbles and swells he gets in that I haven't figured out yet. My layout's pretty close to the Francois Heim layout, which I don't think is far off what Toon plays, and that definitely helps with some of the phrasing. I do run out of air very easily though (possibly due to smaller bellows cross-section), hence some odd little reversals where I try to shove them back in again :Ph

I've also been working on Les Copains, which is also in Bb, and that one isn't too bad either. Harder to make sound good though, as it's a bit nippier ;D

Robotmay, very pleasant to listen to. I like the idea of playing in Bb on an instrument which has no Bb.

Found the title of the first tune mildly amusing so decided to learn it. It's pretty simple but catchy. I've known Parsons Farewell for a long time but never had a tune I was happy to pair it with - I think this works - interested to hear what others think. Does anyone pair either of these tunes with something else?

A set of Limousin marches learned from Les Echos Limousin (dance group based in Argentat, Correze). I had the pleasure of playing with them during a recent morris tour of the area. Great people, not only let me play along but fed me too! Quite simple tunes but the timing is odd in places, still working on getting it just right. Please excuse sound quality, old recorder may be giving up at last.

Here we go - I've learned another tune; the Siege of Guincamp (aka The Breton Wedding March) learned from TomB's wonderful playing earlier in this very thread. I love this tune - it's very "me".

Again, played on the Preciosa in Bb/Eb.

Rochester Lass. Dug from the 'maybe pile' and returned to the 'further work' stack, but an enjoyable outing for the gal meanwhile.

  • Squeezing out Polkas on my Club Accordion.

Dear God, thank you for helping me get and play the melodeon and harmonica. I am extremely grateful for these gifts. Amen.

In today's video I play Amazing Grace on my Accordiola Mundinger Diaton III Grand Luxe club accordion. I "just learned" this tune over the past few weeks/months (can't remember.)  ;D

Enjoy! :D
