Jill Ward, Acorn Instruments
« on: August 01, 2016, 11:08:29 PM »

I would not normally post this on a forum or facebook page however we decided it would save the embarrassment when customers and friends see us at festivals and don't know what to say.

We have sad news to let customers and friends know that after a very brave and courageous fight with Cancer ,sadly Jill passed away very peacefully on Sunday evening.

If you have placed an order or enquiry with us please bear with us at this time.

The good news,Acorn Instruments will be at Whitby Festival again this year and others next year.

Taking on where Jill left off our Daughter Marie and family have agreed to help where possible.

Marie is a very accomplished Piano Accordion player and is one of the founder members on Fiddlers Wreck Ceilidh Band with her sister Nicky and Michael Jary  www.fiddlerswreck.co.uk

Please come and see us and don't feel embarrassed.

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

We gave Jill a good send-off today. A sad/sweet/joyful occasion, very moving throughout. It was lovely to be among and at one with Jill's family and friends. Heartfelt and moving words were said and music played. The singing of 'Wild Mountain Thyme' beautifully and bravely led by Jill's daughter Nicky accompanied by her sister Marie on accordion just opened the floodgates for so many of us. Great reception/wake at a nearby pub afterwards; yummy food and a stonking session! I have no doubt Jill would have approved.

It was good to see some Melnet members there - Theo, Bob, Pikey and myself representing us all here and a big thanks to Pete for organising it all and inviting us all.

Much love to Pete and daughters Marie and Nicky and all the family, from us - Steve and Jan xx

Sounds like it was a good send off - wish I could have been there   - sincere condolences to Pete and family - I have fond memories of jilly coming to my house in Anglesey for a lesson on continental chromatic box and also of many chats with Jilly and Marie at Whitby over the years.

As Steve has already posted, Jill's funeral was very moving and very folk-music-orientated. What modesty forbade him from saying was that the funeral service commenced with a haunting rendition of South Wind by Steve on melodeon and Lucy Nelson on fiddle.

The music session at the reception/wake covered a wide range of tunes, including a couple that were in Jill's repertoire. Naturally, with Pikey among the company, there was the obligatory rendition of Delilah that would have brought a smile to Jill's face.
