Bal band / CD recommendations
« on: August 16, 2016, 10:46:50 AM »

I have been fairly obsessively listening to the likes of Naragonia and Trio Dhoore over the past year. Any recommendations on other bands / cd's in the genre that are worth looking out for.

Thanks

I assume you mean that lovely dreamy feel? Duo Absynthe are another delightful band to dance to … with that right partner.

Otherwise - more upbeat - there are many - eg la Machine do excellent French bal

Try Le Sextet a Claques... their mazurka only EP La Marque Rose is exquisite.

A bit more uptempo; have recently discovered Ciac Boum... bought their set of CDs on the spot. In these days of Spotify, not many bands do that.

Chris / Clive, thanks loads. All your suggestions are great.

Chris - I like the dreamy and upbeat!

Clive - I'm just sitting working listening to Ciac Boum on Youtube. Superb :-)

Also home grown, can I mention Bof! in the more traditional style.
Buy their CD HERE where a whole lot of other rubbish excellent traditional music and song is also available  ;)

(it would be nice to shift a few of my Bof! CDs. Looking at those links now, I've just reduced prices on those two CDs.)

If you like the Ciac Boum stuff, you'll probably like Le Bal Brotto-Lopez; take a listen. Brotto-Lopez have a second album, and an expanded line-up 6 piece album too, but for me they don't quite match the energy/excitement of the Le Bal Brotto-Lopez

Two of my current favourites are Amuseon, "Comme un rond dans l'eau" and Massalès 'Brouff', "Bal Sur Un Plateau", both available from Auvergne Diffusion.

You might like them! :D

Great suggestions :-) Thanks all.

Theo - Blowzabella are a given (I bought my first album of theirs when I was 16), in my fiddle playing life Dave Shepherd tunes still rule.

Dave Sheperd and Anna Pack are now gigging as a duo.  I don't think they have an album out yet, but I think there will be some samples on YouTube.

Theo, yes I've seen videos of them playing tunes off Ashburnham - the album DS did with accordion player Becky Price. This is one of my favourite albums so a new album with Anna Pack would be great if it follows on from where Ashburnham left off.

Les Zéoles came up on YouTube tonight. Am not sure if they are still going, but they are great.
