Bellows dividers
« on: August 29, 2016, 06:54:37 PM »

Can anyone tell me the purpose of bellows dividers as seen on some Quebec-made, Cajun-style accordions such as Melodie?  Are they purely cosmetic?

And, some "clack" during play.

Not knowing any better, I'd always assumed that they were intended to stop poor quality bellows collapsing.

I was told that the segmented bellows came about as it was easier to make two or more short bellows than one long one.

I have to admit that I don't particularly find them cosmetically appealing, and if the quality of bellows nowadays makes their existence unnecessary, I don't really get why they would be used. I used to think that they were used when extra bellows folds were desired, but it doesn't seem that bellows with dividers necessarily have extra folds in them at all.

It maybe that the cardstock used for modern bellows is be made of longer, stiffer fibers, or material which sags less when extended. I have an old camera which has bellows which are almost one meter long one each side and extends to a length of over five meters. This bellows has intermediate frames which prevent the bellows from sagging into the light path when extended.
