Depends on the tune.

Nope, depends on the person

By the way, for the OP, check out Bernard Loffets site, another called diatofiddle, or just google a tune name and then the word 'tablature' or 'partition.'  Tablature is numbered for fingering but always includes the score.  I almost always find at least one version of a tune like this.  When that fails, Play and Teach has come to my rescue.

I don't know how I can agree so much with someone who plays the pipes and likes musette.

The teaching of accordéon here in central France seems to be all by ear.  My teacher plays the new tune at normal speed, then at a slow speed with comments if needed and I record all this.  I get to know the tune by listening lots of times, then start trying to play it.
I do sometimes print off the tablature for a tune but am finding that after about a year or learning by ear, that I remember tunes much more quickly when learned by ear rather than from reading the tablature - I suppose I am learning to learn by ear  :|||:

I think that much traditional music is taught that way. It's a good way, apart from anything else you pick up more than the tunes by this one-to-one guru sharing of the notes. I envy your opportunities. Enjoy your journey. Are you French by the way? And roughly when in France are you?

I am Scottish, but moved to France 6 years ago, when retired from work.  We live in Creuse, Limousin - more or less in the middle of the country.  Wonderful traditional music and dance in the area - and fine people who have welcomed me into their musical scene   :|||:

Muscle memory through repetition might be mentioned. Certain parts of certain tunes have sudden forced bellow shifts which get reinforced.

I don't think there is any such thing as 'muscle memory'.  The 'memory' is entirely in the brain  and simply sends the right  instructions down the arm to elbow aand  digits to operate the bellows and buttons so as to play a particular memorised tune.ones 'bits' simply doing what they are instructed to do by the brain.

Same more or less applies in reverse  - drop a brick on foot and the pain is felt by the brain - no brain no pain!!

I don't think there is any such thing as 'muscle memory'.

Not literally, but there are lower, unconscious level of brain activity that remember sequences of movements, and those parts are quite different from the conscious parts of the brain that read or remember the tune.

I always think of each new tune I learn as a journey to a new place.  The journey is unfamiliar at first but gradually I get to know the landmarks (the buttons I press on the various rows and the direction of the bellows, the patterns of the fingers etc.) and eventually I get to the destination without taking a wrong turning.  I know this probably sounds a bit weird but it definitely works for me.  Each to his own -  as they say!!

at risk of getting shot for continuing the highjacking of the thread I can categorically state that  playing by ear can be taught as indeed playing from the dots can. I have taught a considerable number of people , both individually and in workshops, to play by ear and this includes  quite a few 'dotists' who wanted  to also become 'earists'

george

What is playing by dots? I've searched the forum but haven't been able to figure it out. Is it playing by note?

Yes, playing by/from the dots means "from sheet music".

Some of us love the dots/abc's to learn the basic tune.  Trillian, tuneDB, tunepal, Session, etc. can be your friends for fast learning of nearly any new tune.  Then, of course, you can always "ask Lester", another great resource.
