Emoticons?
« on: October 12, 2016, 12:15:07 PM »

OK, OK, I know I've said before that I hate these, but...........

In a silly posting, the other day, I decided to emerge from the middle ages and actually use one of these dreaded things. When I clicked on the chosen one (cannot now remember exactly what I did) up came some clever looking text along with various symbols, twice as I'd hoped. I pressed the "Post" button, and left it at that.

However, when I checked the posting, lo and behold; there it was, a full row of gobbledegook! So, the question is, "How does your typical Luddite manage to use these infernal little bleeders?"

You were trying to be too clever. All you have to do is click on the selected emoticon while your editor cursor is in the right place in the text. What appears in the text is a short sequence of punctuation characters which are converted on output to the selected graphic.

A side effect is that typing certain unlikely combinations of punctuation characters causes spurious emoticons, e.g.
( : ) (with a space either side of the colon) is OK, but if you leave the spaces out you get a smiley  (:)

Try using The Sandbox.  It's a place where you can mess around, try things out and see what works and what doesn't.  Anything posted there will be deleted after a short while.

Thank you both, it really was incredibly simple, once you know.

It reminded me of watching "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" with my mother. She's often saying something like "How on earth didn't she know the answer to that?" to which my reply is usually "Some things you just don't know, until someone tells you." It doesn't matter how simple something is, if it's outside of your experience or sphere of interest, you're very unlikely to know about it.
