Valse des Jouets - any abc's ?
« on: October 30, 2016, 01:24:15 PM »

Dear all,
One candidate for Tune of the Month in November is a lovely Québécois tune called Valse des Jouets.
Having seen two versions on the Session website, listening to Clive play and a couple others on the net, it appears there are many versions. I suspect the variations are from learning from different sources, maybe badly notated from originals etc.

Has anyone a commonly played version, preferably as abc?

Just don't want to have to re-learn if a web sourced version isn't the common one.
Thanks

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Here's my transcription. I first heard the tune played by Michel at a session we both used to go to in the late 1980s. I can't swear this is exactly as he played it but it'll be very close. As commonly played in Quebec these days.

my plan was to add this to the list of tunes to learn over the winter ......
I stirred last night at some early hour of the morning to realise the opening bars were whirring round my head.
Ah, Earworm alert!

Looks like this evening's entertainment will be taken care of.
I find that my efforts to plan and control my practice gets blown out of the window when something like this happens, but that's all part of the enjoyment of melodeons when something like this grabs you.
Roll on tonight!
cheers

Chords are courtesy of my 14-year-old son, btw, who does a nice job of this on the piano. (:)  D is the original key. I wonder if it will suit the D/G box chord-wise - can the all-important Bm chords be got against the melody? I notice that D/G players tend not to play Far Away in its original key of Bm, presumably for reasons of chord availability.

D/G players tend not to play anything in B minor. I don't know why - B minor dorian especially is a lovely key and it sits nicely in the middle of the keyboard. But it can involve a fair bit of cross-rowing and/or unfamiliar push-pull patterns, so it often gets neglected or else Bm tunes are transposed into the somewhat more intuitive key of E minor.

Yes, it fits beautifully on a standard 2 row 8 bass, playing mostly on the outside row. You do need to cross rows (a bit) to get the chords to work 100%.

After a quick twiddle.... Yes it does fit nicely on a 2 row 8 bass DG.
I'm a cross- rower so getting the given chords to fit are fine with me.
Thanks Stiamh for the abc's and Clive for alerting me to this tune in the first instance, I'll enjoy learning this!
Cheers
