Ska Melodeon
« on: July 02, 2009, 10:07:46 AM »

I've been listening to a album I just bought (got reccomended when I bought Madness' new album) its called 'Ska Madness' anyway back to the point there's a band on it called 'The Melodians'. lol!
Which made me think...how do you do a ska rhythm on melodeon? Is it possible?

Listen to Eii (Edward the Second and the Red Hot Polkas) - Can't remember the album names without looking - they fused reggae and English folk - superb version of "People Get Ready" on one album - Lots of brass, melodeon and a reggae rhythm section.

I used to be in the aforementioned Edward the Second and found that ska/reggae and English dance tunes fitted each other perfectly. The biggest problem I had when first joining the band was coming in on the right beat as the reggae one-drop places the accent on the third beat!
Early albums from E2 are Let's Polka Steady, Two Step to Heaven and Wicked Men.

There is a great melodeon ska band here in Welshpool. They're called Poolside Tricks. The line-up is tea chest bass, djembe drum and Hohner 1 row, 4 stop melodeon in C. The melodeon is played by Dan Eldon, son of Jim and Lynette. Dan is an absolute master of ska melodeon and manages to combine the horn lines with the skank guitar rhythm.
You can hear some of their early (very rough) recordings here: http://www.myspace.com/poolsidetricks
A good time fun band.

Where would I buy the albums from? Would they be on amazon?

There is a lot of reggae and ska influence in the music we use for border morris, so hornpipes are eligible for the treatment!

Bet a reggae drunken sailor or trumpet hornpipe would sound good.

That's probably the only place to find that stuff now as the earlier albiums are no longer available.

Whapweasel also do ska folk; Simon Care plays melodeon in both bands (and Saul Rose also plays with Whapweasel) -- but Whapweasel play their own original tunes rather than traditional tunes.
I had to look this up to try and see what happened to Robin Jowett - I know his dad and remember a son being quite poorly, was that Robin? Tony.

No, that's what melodeons are for.

I had a friend who used to keep his accordion under the bed - during a night of great passion the bed was broke and so was the accordion. It was, as he wryly commented, the most expensive and painful squeeze he'd experienced since his divorce! Ah...the lessons we learn too late. By the way - and just to stay on topic in this thread - he still has the skas to remind him ;D

My response is similar in vein to that of Rees. It is appallingly awful, and guaranteed to put any right-minded person off Christianity! Stuff like this only makes my work harder.

On the other hand it's in tune and in time!  Mindnumbingly bad, theological dross but competently delivered.  There might be a lesson there >:E

I feel for you on that one Al. This kind of stuff must drive you round the bend.

Nice keyboard work though. Cheesy but accurate.
