Poll: Tune of the Month for December 2016
« on: November 23, 2016, 11:55:25 PM »

Hi all - this month's selection:

Valse des Jouets - in again as runner up last month, this waltz by Michel Faubert plays beautifully on a 2 row quint box, like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTOuMArlqGM  . Also comes with this slowed down version (in A/D unfortunately, but you get the idea) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9WCDEmiQHI

Bagpipers - Thank you Helena for this suggestion, and thank you Pete for this demonstration on a Bb/Eb box https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vbp8z0omqFM (you can get that chord drone effect on a typical D/G  by holding down the C chord button if you were wondering)

Mona's Delight - heard Lester playing this in a session a couple of weeks back; nice tune I think. From the Isle of Man, and here demonstrated by Lester with ABC: http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/tune-109-monas-delight.html

Star of the County Down - this played on 'autoplay next video' feature of youtube while I was browsing for tunes; Hector does a really nice job of this tune; shows just what's possible! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XvFBDICSoA

There you are folks; happy voting!

As I nominated 'Bagpipers' I suppose I'd better give it a push. Here it is played superbly (how else?) by Leveret.  There's also a fabulous version on the new Lady Maisery album 'Cycle' which is worth checking out if you haven't already.

Finally, here's my abc:

 (B/c/d d)c|B3A|(B>A)(Bc)|d2d:|!

 (f/e/f/g/ a)a|(B/c/d d)c|B3A|(B>A)(Bc)|d2d:

This version is in D and is fairly accurate to the recently released recorded versions that led me to fall in love with this tune in the first place.

Thank you! I loved this tune when I heard Lady Maisery's diddling version. I will do it regardless of the vote!

I'm guessing that as Valse de Jouets is a Quebec tune it can be played on a one row. I can't get to a box at the moment to try. Hope some good old boy comes up with a one row version I can steal...

Yes, Chris Wood/Andy Cutting did a one row version on their 'Live at Sidmouth' album, though I believe they mostly used to do it on the 2.5 row - the live recording was a one off concert where they happened to have a guitarist guesting, so the arrangements were rather different to what they normally did. Personal taste time, but their 2.5 row version was *much* better.

Found this rather nice version of Valse de Jouets whilst hunting around on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wqYy_MZcLc
I believe Anatoly is a member here, though I somehow missed his TotM submissions in the past. He has some lovely sets on his YouTube account (:)

Clive, in your first post here you seem to have your links the wrong way round for the two versions of Valse des Jouets!

Have I? Looks ok to me - the slowed down version plays it full pace early on and then breaks it down slowly later though...

Beg your puddin' sir, you're quite right. The second one starts faster than yours, and I didn't listen all the way through   :-[

As you were, then...

Gosh, three out of the four nominations this month are ones that I would gladly vote for. Mona's Delight is one of the very first tunes I learned to play, mostly from the playing of Steve Dumpleton (of this parish).
For those of you interested in Star of the County Down, have a search on youtube (I cannot post a link from this device) of a band called The Orthodox Celts (who bill themselves as the best Irish band in Belgrade) and the name of the tune. Their version is simultaneously delightful and hilarious, as the singer has clearly decided it needs to be sung in an Irish accent, on top of his Serbian accent.

I just sight read through this version in a one row D box; well suited to one row melodeon.

If this tune is picked for TOTM, I will probably learn it and post, then you can learn it by ear.
