Theme of the Month for December 2016: Christmas, Winter, etc
« on: December 01, 2016, 12:12:40 AM »

Yes, it's that time of year again - when we do the Christmas thing, and record anything Christmassy, or even slightly, tangentially related to the time of year. The more tenuous the better! I've just about played everything I know over the years, but I'm sure I can dig something new up - let's see if you can all too!

Cheers,

Clive

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

https://youtu.be/yjXvDcIUXoE

The origin of the words for this advent hymn are fairly clear; they come from the latin hymn Veni Emmanuel, and were first linked with this tune in the mid 19th century.  The tune however, can be found in a 15th century manuscript of processionals in the French National Library, so dates from at least that time...maybe earlier.  It certainly has a medieval feel to it.

In response to theme of the month for December 2016 - a new tune to old words - Hark the Herald, but as a lullaby. I've never really liked the original tune (not saying mine is an improvement) as it seems too dictatorial - you will hark or else!
I've only included a pdf in C as I think transposing it will make it harder to sing. This post is also in my tunes thread. Ideally I'd record it sung with melodeon accompaniment. Not sure if I'll manage that.

EDIT Decided to change the F chord on nations to a C chord - the F voicing works ok on piano, but not so well on melodeon.

Here's a straight to video camera version of the lullaby written to the words of Hark the Herald. It needs a singer and better audio, but life gets in the way.

A couple of tunes

https://youtu.be/WHBzsRX1g48

The first by Mr Kirkpatrick having seen him perform recently and purchased his tunebook, (in full expectation of it sitting unexplored on the shelf).

The second Mr Berlin's obvious choice which I have played on Anglo and realised may be capable of being squeezed upon the  Pokerwork. Imperfect but a new 'try out'.

Happy Christmas

Done a couple of recordings for the Christmas theme this year... firstly this crooked tune from West Virginia old time fiddle player French Carpenter's playing - Old Christmas Morning:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpjuJ6uYVaE [[[ Oops, thanks Roger, link corrected ]]]

If you like it, I'd recommend following the link in the youtube video description to David Bragger's excellent fiddle tutorial videos which I nicked it off. It's an unusual structure of tune - 2 x A; B bridge lasting a few bars, 3 x C music. Bit of a brain-twister! Played on a Van der Aa Compact III in G/C.

... and because when my wife suggested we do a Christmas theme again this year, she almost certainly wasn't expecting me to pull a West Virginia fiddle tune out of the bag, here's what happens when I play Silent Night on the Castagnari Mory in D/G.

Cheers,

Clive

I think you may have pasted in the wrong link for Old Christmas Morning - it takes me to Bagpipers. This looks better:

Merry Christmas everybody..Here is my debut entry for Theme of the Month.

Stop The Cavalry

I uploaded this again because the audio wasn't very good, not that this one is much better.

''Welcome Christmas Morning''  written by Sir Jimmy Shand  is a lovelu 3/4 tune well worth having a go at. There aare 3 renditions of it on youtube by melodeonman52 (Ian Cruikshanks),  Daniel McPhee both on 3 row boxes and Yvonnne MacLoed on piano box.

Here's one from a couple of years ago recorded on Christmas eve after quite a few nips of Xmas cheer:

Clive: I enjoyed both your tunes, and appreciated seeing and listening to a Van der Aa in action.

Glad you liked them - likely to be the last recordings for a while unfortunately - have fallen and broken my shoulder (and foot) so I'm on a several month hiatus now. Irritated to say the least with my stupidity.

Oh no!
Really sorry to hear you've been in the wars. All I can say is I hope you have a relatively speedy recovery.

Clive, that's terrible news! I'm so sorry-that's my worst nightmare, not being able to play an instrument for a long time. Here's hoping for a quick and complete recovery, and that melodeon playing is regarded as essential physiotherapy for shoulders so you can get back to it soon....

Best wishes,

Judging from your videos it looks as if your line of work is also out at the moment - a double blow, enforced time off but not able to indulge in your main hobby.
Time for singing lessons? Good luck with the recovery.
