Massive hardware failure at the web hosting service, apparently. (as reported on concertina.net)

I don't quite see how modern virtual machine based cloud hosting can go down for such a long time.
I wouldn't expect Bytemark Cloud Hosting, on which I offer a web hosting service, ever to fail on quite that scale. They can do live migration to new hardware (no downtime) and whenever I've upgraded my server's memory or disk space, all it needed was a reboot which took about a minute. Even if their data centre in Manchester got bombed to extinction they have another one in York...

Agree with Anahata - this is not 21st century web hosting. AND their external server keeps throwing me (and others) 403 errors … making us sign out, close browser and sign back in, just to post little follow ups like this :(

I use "Anahata Hosting Ltd"  ::) for 5 sites in total, and can thoroughly recommend it with nothing ever lost,  I even get my own email IMAP server. STRONGLY recommended after this debacle. (He's a pretty good web jocky too, not even expensive). Get a quote? :|glug

Great to be back ! Much missed.
I spent my spare moments trying to learn 'Cinema Central/Stimulo' by the wonderful Trio Dhoore. Might take a few more days unless I can find some dots...could be even quicker if the server fails again but lets not tempt fate !

I really missed everyone here, and realised how often I pop into the site during the day.
It allows me to escape, a sort of virtual comfort blanket!

I was getting those 403 errors. I know nothing about computers and do all my internetting on my smartphone. In a rare moment of clarity I deleted the melnet icon off my home screen and logged in via google then reinstated the icon and Bobs your Uncle. No problems since. I'm kind of disappointed that what I thought was a rare victory over the digital world was just a matter of coinciding with the thing being fixed! Ho hum. Bob

Due to melnet's absence, I actually had to do some work this week. Thank goodness it is back. As Wally said in Dilbert, "How did people look busy before computers??"

Martin, I'm becoming exceedingly jealous.....
I use it as a necessary relief from the traumas of work. Cutting away from the grind, relieves tension and reminds me of the real world outside and refreshes me for the next bit. If you can call melodeons something inhabiting the real world!!!
Currently it gives me an escape from having to work with an IT system where the servers keep going down, and having to fight a system just to do something incredibly simple.
Ironic or what?

I have been retired for about 12 years, and because of advancing age, I find that office hours, are about as long as I can stay awake. (Or sober)
