Chat Function?
« on: January 20, 2017, 04:12:26 AM »

Is there a type of chat function available? For example, if I see someone is online the same time I am, is there a way to contact them with a beep or message alert and go to a chat area? Might be kind of fun to have a real time chat with someone about a melodeon topic or whatever.

If you see someone is on line you can send them a pm.  If you both have notification turned on you will get a pop up reminder that a message has arrived. Not exactly a chat function, but close.

Yep, another sterling opportunity to talk nonsense about squeezeboxes, although in reality the group should be called the 'is melnet down?' group 'cos that's what it is mostly used for.

oh.... didn't realise there was a fb melnet group, being an infrequent fb'er.
I did wonder with Melnet down how on earth to find out if the site was down or whether it was just me.
Might have to log on then.......

It looks like Simple Machines has a few chat programs.

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3711

This one is compared to the FB/Gmail style chat windows. Not sure if the Theo/Clive/etc are even considering this but it looks like there are options.

That looks very cool and I would support getting it for Melnet.

Would it not water down melnet's content? I don't have Facebook and will never have Facebook and would be saddened if such a suggestion affected the forum in the slightest bit.Don't members chat well enough on this forum or am I missing an important detail here?

I too think the best thing about melnet is its 'collegiate' nature, with multiple opinions chipping in

There are thousands of ways to chat.  Indeed some 'box players' ;) do very well indeed on Twitter!

I agree that Melnet has a collegiate nature and its strength is in that.
I confess to have just joined the Facebook page an hour ago. When the server crashed I assumed it was that, but as time went on was wondering what was going on. This is another conduit to those members on fb and another avenue of communication.
I'm not a regular face Booker by any means, quite the opposite, but at times it can be useful.
This forum will always be my regular browsing space.

I think you're absolutely right.  In another area of interest I was an active contributor to a  discussion group. The group started a FB page and I expressed concern that it would impact adversely on the group's postings. Within  a couple of months postings to the group were down from about 10-12 per day to about one a week, and now it's down to about one every 3 months, if that.

I've seen mailing lists and forums collapse when a Facebook page arrives. There is more than one reason, Facebook groups are harder to moderate and can be more contentious.

The Melnet FB group is actually very quiet, and serves as a backup channel when there are problems here. It has been that way for a while, and no obvious attempt to change it.
Others have pointed out that emailing the admins is an option, fair enough, but this method does allow multiple members to be informed quickly and easily.

As for a chat channel, very often a question asked by someone is actually of interest to a much wider group of people, who variously may join in or just observe with interest. It would be a shame for that traffic to be locked up in private chat conversations.
It's possible to make private contact by PM or email, obviously, but recognised that is not real time.

Another big advantage of this forum over FB is that we have complete control of the whole site, we aren't trying to advertise to members and so it avoids much of the annoying drip feed of sponsored posts that plague FB.  We also have a range of categories and named topics, so I think it is much easier to find ones way around than it would be if the same volume of discussion happened on FB.  I've seen a post today on the  melnet page on FB asking for information about a box.   I've suggested that they ask on here instead.

I think Malcolm sums it up for me - a back up channel in case of problems oh this site.
Having experienced continual server crashes at work since early September my head is scrambled with 'server problems' and the wind up it creates. Luckily here it's the first serious one I remember since joining.
If I can keep up with the news of a problem without having to pester people then that's all I want.
