Theme of the Month for February 2017: Tunes You Love
« on: February 01, 2017, 01:10:18 PM »

In the spirit of the month of Valentine's Day (ish) play a tune you particularly love, whether it's one you've recently discovered (new love) or one you've known for an while (old love)...

I was introduced to Bonny At Morn at Julian Sutton's workshop at Witney in November and haven't really been able to leave it alone since.  Definitely a tune I now love.  Here is where I've got to with it:

Back in my college days in Frankfurt Germany, I use to busk this tune on my fiddle
for the Irish, made some life long friends with some of them in the bargain,This tune has
Happy memories for me.

I can't find the original thread for where I was going to upload things we were working on - a sort of new year's resolution thread. But it seems appropriate for this piece to end up here anyway.
A deliberate work in progress recording of Amelie.
So while I'm at this new found me of recording more simply without letting the fear of exposing mistakes lead to multiple retakes, here are 2 more tunes I love. Both by Delicq
La Femme de Marbre
En Temps de Huit Ans

I'l throw another tune into the hat. A waltz I have played and loved for a while,a favorite fiddle tune of mine.
I have been calling it by a name that belongs to another waltz, so I changed it to

The Blue Range Waltz

At the risk of outstaying my welcome, here's another tune I've really enjoyed learning.
Still a bit lumpy in places, but definite progress I feel.
The tune of the month doesn't make me want to grab my melodeon, so I'm grateful for the broad theme of the month.
British Swing from the Milleret and Pignol method.

Nigel, I enjoyed hearing Bonny at Morn again. Sounds great.

Like many people, I love almost everything written by Stephane Delicq. Choosing from the few that I can play is difficult but, at the end of the day, it comes down to this simple little mazurka. Very laid back and gentle, I love it for the mood it creates....Mazurchats, https://youtu.be/DNDYZnLNCmU

Very nice tune & played with a wonderful simplicity & sense of rhythm - really enjoyed it. The tune is a little reminiscent of La 500/Bec a Bec:

A couple of earworms from East Suffolk Morris repertoire which I have not posted previously.

Bonnets So Blue (Upton Stick) and A Shropshire Lad (aka Captain Webb).

4 stop G, three voice D/G both Hohner.

Chilly winds in Suffolk but warm wishes none the less.

I picked it up years ago at a session in Newfoundland Canada, I was playing fiddle at the time and an old couple both fiddle players did an amazing duet with this tune, I set about learning it before I returned home. But I can't remember what it's called.

I think that Morning Star and Flowers of Edinburgh go together nicely and I particularly like this version (played here on a D/G Castagnari Sander)...

https://youtu.be/Sz4yAVuqwlE

I learnt this from Jess & Richard Arrowsmith's album "Customs and Excise" - so if you want to hear it played properly that's where to find it (http://www.arrowsmithmusic.co.uk/Merchandise.html).

Spoke to a friend up there and he thinks it is called By The Glow of the Kerosene Light. It is a very popular song on the island and was written by a local gentleman named Wince Coles.

Been a bit bored this last week gone after hurting my wrist and not being able to play.
Just clicked on this theme and ran down the tunes offered.
I think they all are all well played, a lovely mix from all parts of the compass and really enjoyable.
Thank you all for posting.

It'd be a bit strong to say I 'love' any tunes but here are a couple that I'm really enjoying playing at the moment.   (:) :||:

Long Odds and The Swiss Boy.  You'd probably say they're schottisches.

A tune from the Czech Republic. We've been together for many years but I still find it a challenge to play.

https://youtu.be/KtIFTOrj3-8

There is this video on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYVNbSR1c1I where the tune is interpreted by its author (who is an immensely famous singer among the Czech). Unfortunately the melodeon part is clearly playback, unlike in other Nohavica's videos.
