Egyptian songs?
« on: February 05, 2017, 09:15:58 PM »

My bellydance band just got hired to play at a private party, and they're looking for some Egyptian songs.  I'd love to add some songs like this to my accordion practice repertoire and maybe pull some out at the gig.  Do you have any leads on sheet music for Egyptian or Middle Eastern songs?

I play a G/C, mainly French stuff so far.

Thanks!

No Egyptian stuff I'm afraid, but i can do you Lebanon, Israel, Morocco, Turkey and "North Africa" - a bit dodgy the latter though. Any of these any good for you? I have them in abc, but i think there may be too many to send from this site.

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Just a (silly?) afterthought about what the punters might expect  - "The old bazaar in Cairo" and "The King of Little Egypt" (you know - the one that everybody thinks of when they hear the words "belly dance", with the chorus which goes something like "Singing Nellie put your belly next to mine".) I can't supply the latter, but I'm OK for the Old Bazaar.
I can also weed out non G/C stuff - I'm getting rather good at that!

Very simple but real folk tune which any Egyptian will know:

Lebanese performance:

Bellydance version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JF2WpXyPX8

I find it's a good thing to lead into from an improvisation in the same mode (I most often do it on the sax, with maximal smoky nightclub sleaze).

This is often thought of as Lebanese, since it was a hit for Fairuz, but it's originally Egyptian:

Code: [Select]

T:Bint al Shalabiyya
M:2/4
L:1/16
Q:1/4=80
K:Dmin

     D2EF GF`FE|ED`D^C DE`FG|A2`B2``B2A2|
     BAGF AG`FE|D2`EF  GF`FE|ED`D^C D2 |]

Keep the vamp in bars 4-6 going throughout if you have an instrument that can do it.  Percussion playing basically the same rhythm would be a very good idea.  It just whooshes along in regular scales and it's pretty easy to play.

Lyrics:
http://www.shira.net/music/lyrics/bint-el-shalabia.htm

(if you get it right with an Arabic-speaking audience, people WILL sing along)

Fairuz's version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Briw30_4PRM

"Aziza" is definitely Egyptian and from nowhere else, and anybody in the Arab world or the bellydancing scene will know it, but it's an absolute bastard to play with all the the tempo and metre changes.  Bellydancers love it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5G2jiEskw3U

If you really want to give it a try, I have the dots somewhere.  I faked a lot of it on the clarinet, and now I can't play the clarinet with my buggered teeth I'd have to fake even more on the oud.

A competent percussionist is pretty much a must for this kind of music.

I am not sure of the ethnicity of this tune, but I think it is a great middle Eastern Tune.  Charlie

Nice tune, but the notation is a bit confusing - it's in hijaz and the G flats should be F sharps.  (Completely diatonic if you have two flats and an F sharp in the key signature, i.e. perfect for a G harmonic minor moothie).

This tune was used as an intro by Oum Kolsoum's band, repeated over and over again until the audience was clapping along loud enough that she felt it was time to come on stage.

Incidentally, why does abcm2ps make such a botch of the slurs in Dulab Hijaz?  There's nothing wrong with with the way I wrote them, and I'd turned off automatic gracenote slurring.  Result attached.  Is there a workaround?

I can't offer any help with your abcm2ps query, but thanks Jack for Dulab Hijaz.  The tune sounds very atmospheric and full of potential - and when transposed to B phrygian it seems playable on a D/G box. I'd like to hear a recording to get an idea of how it should sound. Could you suggest any suitable youtube videos to help me get a better feel for the tune?

Oum Kolsoum sounds like she must've been an amazing singer.

That has me flummoxed.  I can't find the version our (defunct) band learned from; there are a number of YouTube videos of approximately the same thing, but generally in a much more staccato style that you couldn't keep up for long.

This is another classic Oum Kolsoum/Mohamed al-Wahab number (probably the most famous Arabic song of the 20th century):

http://arabicmusicsheets.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/enta-omri-song-sheet.html (there is both a score and embedded video, with some illuminating commentary).

It's nearly diatonic.  Another favourite with bellydancers.  There are lots of instrumental versions on the web:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceGmCUBkOQQ (Hossam Ramzy)

I have a cleaner copy, from Mike's Oud Forums (http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=12328&goto=search&pid=83997), but it's 5 pages, too big to attach, and the forum wouldn't let me attach parts of it after my first try - send me your email in a PM and I'll send it it to you if you can't access that forum.

And following links from that, I came across this one, which I didn't know, but it works very well as an instrumental:

http://arabicmusicsheets.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/alf-leila-wa-leila-music-sheet.html

Entirely in nahawand (G harmonic minor) except for one rather dramatic D flat.

I joined Mike's Oud Forum years ago to find info about my 1920's oud (which sadly hangs unplayed on the wall next to the baglama and bouzouki that I bought in the 1980's) and so I'm ok with getting that music, thanks. But those other songs are a bit too much for me to absorb right now and I'll just try to work out the Dulab Hijaz piece on the melodeon.

thanks, Ian

Whoa.  Is that supposed to Ghandi tapdancing at about the 1:15 mark?

I'd love to see any of that stuff!  I've been a bellydancer for 20 years and a melodeon player for about 6 months, so it's exciting to think about where those worlds might intersect.

I see some bellydancers use Fairouz's song "Nassam alayna al hawa" - it's very definitely NOT Egyptian, but Egyptians will mostly know it and it is purely diatonic (notes of the Phrygian scale, and I think the pattern would suit a bisonoric instrument).

I don't know but it's very dodgy through 21st century glasses. I was surprised by the melodeon though - not something I associated with them

So true! Perhaps that's where so many of us old farts are going wrong; we must need to "get to" Specsavers instead of Greggs?
